All about transport planning - Cambridge

Atkins, a member of the AtkinsRéalis group, provides expert consultancy that covers the full project lifecycle. We build strong client relationships by understanding the challenges they face, sharing their vision and helping them transform potential into reality. Our Transport Planning practice is home to some 300 people including planners, economists, engineers, communications specialists, modellers and mathematicians. We help identify and develop optimum transport solutions in response to transport challenges that create opportunities for investment and sustainable economic growth shaping the future of transport infrastructure. 

We work across four technical disciplines which cover the full range of transport planning capabilities:

Strategy 

In Strategy we provide consultancy advice to public sector clients at the early stage of the planning lifecycle; working with clients to shape their objectives, problem solve, identify and shortlist policy, service and infrastructure interventions.

Transport Modelling

Our Transport modellers undertake detail assessment for the future transport systems at both strategic and micro simulation scales to inform decision making regarding new transport schemes.

We provide Economics and Business Case expertise covering all areas of economic analysis, wider appraisal and development of business cases for transport investment, delivery and operation.

Cities

Our Cities discipline covers development planning, the assessment of public realm, space planning and sustainable access strategies, making use of innovative technologies such as the Atkins virtual street design tool. 

The Team IN Cambridge

Our Cambridge Transport Planning Practice is home to a team of 25 professionals delivering exciting projects across the full range of Transport Planning capabilities of Modelling, Development Planning, Transport Economics & Business Case, Highway Design and Data Analytics. We develop innovative transport solutions to address the challenges faced by our local, national and global clients from both the private and public sector. 


Some of our key clients include the Greater Cambridge Partnership, Heathrow, Highways England, Department for Transport and Hampshire County Council. Our team regularly works with our colleagues in other UK offices and in our Global Design Centre meaning that we have industry specialist at our disposal to offer our clients with the most innovative solutions. Working with other offices ensures that we have a steady work-stream and constant project support when needed.


Atkins is a leader in flexible working which allows staff to work around their own lifestyles. We have a number of staff that work different hours to fit around childcare and other personal commitments.

Our recently refurbished office is situated in an ideal location to the north of Cambridge, just five minutes from the City Centre and served by frequent public transport links. Many of our staff commute by cycle as the office has excellent links to the City Centre and surrounding villages. Our office has ample cycle parking space with a shower, changing facilities and storage lockers. The office is also easily accessible by car via the newly upgraded A14.


We have over 90 staff in the office, making it an exciting place to work, but is a very personable and friendly office. There is an active social scene with regular events including punting on the River Cam, tenpin bowling, and summer BBQ’s. The Early Careers community is also very active with regular socials including FootGolf, Rock Climbing and Ice Skating.
