“I tried a few different companies and a few different roles until I found the right place, here at Atkins.”

Hello I’m Jessica, Graduate Civil Engineer at Atkins, a member of the AtkinsRéalis Group, in the UK. I started off doing work experience here. And now I’m really pleased to be a real part of the business in the Graduate Development Programme.

Why doing work experience was important to me

I wasn’t sure which discipline of engineering I wanted to pursue. So I decided to try everything before I was qualified to ensure I got the best job for me. I tried a few different companies and a few different roles until I found the right place, here at Atkins.

What my work experience was like at Atkins

It was great to be surrounded by many experienced professionals all working on various projects. Everyone was so friendly, that I felt comfortable asking questions and getting the support I needed, which helped me learn a lot. The people I worked with are great assets to Atkins – and they took the time to welcome me as a part of the team and made my work experience enjoyable.

Two of my achievements as a Graduate Engineer

The amazing thing about being a Civil Engineer is working on local projects and being able to say, I played a part in taking ‘that’ from an idea to an actual working structure. Here are two exciting projects that I’ve worked on:

I provided the preliminary design for the Mytholmroyd Footbridge Replacement. This includes steel beam and composite deck design, costings and a designer’s risk assessment.

I also worked on the Humber Bridge Hanger Replacement. I provided an in-depth study of how the works would affect the surrounding road network in terms of delays and proposed diversions. I then calculated the revenue that would be lost from closing the bridge.

What working at Atkins has taught me about myself

• I discovered my multitasking ability from working on multiple projects at once.

• I’m a great communicator and very organized, which helps everyone around me. I can remind them of upcoming meetings and deadlines, keeping everyone on track!
