What you’ll be studying
All of our Cumbria roles are based in our Whitehaven office within the Nuclear and Power business area. For more information on this business area please click here. We have a range of apprenticeship opportunities at various levels. Please click on the links below to understand in more detail what each individual apprenticeship involves:
Level 5 Higher Apprenticeships
Nuclear Technician – click here
Academic Requirements: A suitable Level 3 qualification (equivalent to 48 UCAS points) or a Level 3 National College for Nuclear Access to Nuclear Engineering and Science.
Level 6 Degree Apprenticeships
Digital & Technology Solutions – click here
Academic requirements: You will typically have English and Maths at GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent) NB: evidence of level 2 English and Maths is required to complete the apprenticeship. An A-level in a similar subject, an apprenticeship in a similar subject (minimum level 3) or a BTEC Extended Diploma in IT (180 credits).

Academic requirements: You will typically have at least three A levels at Grades A*-C including Mathematics and Physical Science or their equivalent or will have completed a Level 3 Apprenticeship as a Civil Engineering Technician.

Academic requirements: You will typically have grade C or above in at least five GCSE’s including English, Maths and a Science subject and will hold a minimum of 96 UCAS points or existing relevant Level 3 qualifications.

Academic requirements: You will typically have grade C or above in at least five GCSE’s including English, Maths and a Science subject and will hold a minimum of 96 UCAS points or existing relevant Level 3 qualifications.

Academic requirements: You will typically have 5 GCSEs including a C/5 in Maths & English Language and 120 UCAS points
What you could be doing
Join us as an Apprentice at Atkins and be part of a team of big thinkers. You'll be paid for gaining your apprenticeship qualification while enjoying on-the-job mentoring and learning. Your skills will be essential to us, supporting the technical aspects of multidisciplinary design projects. You'll be making a sustainable difference in people's lives, shaping cities, reimagining transport and transforming nuclear energy. And with the choice to work across Cities & Development, Energy, Transportation, Water or Environment, you'll decide where you want your career to go.
Examples of tasks that an apprentice could undertake are:
- Supporting engineers creating groundbreaking designs for all kinds of projects
- Get an opportunity to see first-hand how the team provides discipline lead support and see how these skills and expertise are applied to companies.
- As an apprentice you’ll get the opportunity to develop your capability in a wide range of exciting projects
- Create CAD drawings and maintain the drawing register
- Supporting client meetings and assisting in building relationships
- Shaping the future of the digital world
