Insights Crossrail Farringdon Station
Farringdon Station creates a world-class interchange for the Elizabeth line, with an expected 140 trains passing through every hour. It will be the only station to connect Thameslink, the Elizabeth line and London Underground services.
Atkins has led the detailed design for the station using the highest quality architectural finishes. Glass fibre reinforced concrete cladding panels have been incorporated into platform areas creating a style and character unique to the new central section stations.
Farringdon’s Elizabeth line station will be served by two east and eastbound sub-surface platforms, accessible from street level. Above ground, the station will accommodate major new commercial oversite developments.
Multiple local stakeholders were consulted during the design development of the two entrance halls as each is located within a conservation area. To ensure the station design appropriately integrated with the local community, an interface management process was followed, consulting local stakeholders throughout the 10 design and construction contracts.
Farringdon was a complex project and as lead consultant on the station’s development, Atkins coordinated the design, managing its complexity using expert design and project management. This involved delivering multiple design packages to enable the contractor to maintain the construction programme and achieve key milestones, ensuring the successful delivery of the overall Crossrail programme.
