How teamwork and diversity are shaping the Oslo-S Project
Say "Hej" to Niels, Project Director at Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group – and one of our 2020 President's Awards Winners in the UK & Europe. Oslo S, our most significant project in Norway, is largely down to his personal commitment and passion: to our clients, to the quality of work, and, most importantly, to his hard-working team. We recently dropped in on Niels in Copenhagen, Denmark, for his take on life #InsideAtkins:
Why is Atkins a great place to be?
I'm surrounded by brilliant people from all kinds of backgrounds, which is exciting. The way we cooperate means we feed each other's success. We take pride in the fact that we always manage to come together to deliver great work for our clients every single time. There are also many great opportunities to constantly develop ourselves across a broad range of areas.
How is collaboration central to what you do at Atkins?
It's everything. The way we collaborate is one of the best things about being part of Atkins. It works really well at every level of the organization and across country borders. My colleagues all have their own, very different roles and responsibilities. That means that the team spirit and cooperation must be incredibly close for us to achieve our common goals.
How has your team's diversity helped you achieve excellence in your projects?
Our diversity is why we're such a unique project. I appreciate the fact that colleagues from Atkins based in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and India can combine our knowledge and work together on Oslo S. The quality becomes optimal because everyone takes responsibility and is devoted to collaborating across our many different tasks.
What one amazing thing has Atkins helped you discover about yourself?
Working at Atkins has improved me as a leader, both in practical project management skills and the relational aspects of leadership. To me, a leader is someone who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way, and this is a mantra I strive to live up to every day.
It has also provided me with the strength and confidence to work further up the management chain. And sure, managing something as big as the Oslo S-project requires a lot of hard work. But it's extremely rewarding, and I thoroughly enjoy it.
How does your voice matter at Atkins?
It means a lot to have my voice heard – and in my opinion, it's the best way both Atkins and I can develop further. The Oslo S-project was one of the first projects to successfully use the 'Global Design Centre' (GDC) in India. It has resulted in many colleagues consulting me for advice on how to best use the GDC's competencies. It's great to see that from now on, several other Danish projects will also collaborate with them as an essential resource.
How are your teams thriving together at Atkins?
My team is doing really well, and we honestly stand together as a family. On this project, no challenge is too big nor too small – and everyone is there to helps each other out.
