Insights Why India is the place to build your civil engineering career

Civil engineers play a crucial role in shaping and transforming developing countries such as India, and we’re seeing an upward trend in demand for innovative professionals. With the projected growing and aging population, Global Construction Perspectives (GCP) and Oxford Economics predict that the volume of construction output will grow by 85% to $15.5 trillion worldwide by 2030. China, the USA and India are expected to lead the way and accounting for 57% of all global growth. Graham Robinson, Executive Director of GCP, states that India is to provide a new engine of global growth for construction in emerging markets, growing almost twice as fast as China. Hence, India offers an abundance of opportunities for Civil engineers with the aim of transforming the country.

India’s population is expected to hit 1.4 billion by 2025 and it is evident that infrastructure must sustainably meet the demands of this growth. This will provide a multitude of new prospects for those working in construction, including structural, mechanical, and civil engineers to use innovation. At Atkins, a member of the AtkinsRéalis Group, we are committed to seizing these opportunities and providing prospects for ambitious individuals to build exciting careers delivering safe, sustainable, and innovative infrastructure for India’s future.

Why work as a civil engineer in India?

With an ever-increasing need to meet the demands of the growing population in India, the construction industry needs creative engineers to bring a new wave of sustainable thinking into the industry to build a greener future. There are many infrastructure projects on the horizon in India which will create an array of opportunities for innovative civil engineers with a penchant for sustainable development. Over the coming years, we will see the delivery of flagship schemes such as the Delhi-Mumbai Trade Corridor; a quick and reliable trade route linking the north of India to the south, and Diamond Quadrilateral; a high-speed rail network connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. In addition, the pandemic has hit fast forward on India's digital transformation, and we will continue to see digital technologies being leveraged in engineering.

Civil engineers at Atkins India are committed to design excellence and the delivery of first-class solutions which combine innovation, imagination, and best practice. We are proud to have a team of engineering and design experts who have the skills and capability to deliver both national and international infrastructure projects. Atkins’ Global Design Centre (GDC) in India was chosen to deliver the detailed design of three sections of the A14 between Cambridge and Huntingdon on behalf of Highways England. By working collaboratively with the client and stakeholders, our multidisciplinary team successfully provided validation of preliminary designs, and design and deliverables for the contractor’s costs in addition to construction costs.

The role of technology in building India’s future

Whilst problem-solving skills and technical expertise are still vital, technology has enabled civil engineering to become increasingly innovative, challenging the preconception of a once structured and disciplined career.

Civil engineers in India use technology to contribute to the design and creation of transport and infrastructure development, providing connectivity for 1.3 billion residents. Engineers commonly employ technology like Building Information Modelling (BIM) to cut waste and reduce the energy and materials used, whilst also saving time and money. BIM allows engineers to map the lifecycle of projects and accurately calculate the resources needed.

Our mission for civil engineers at Atkins India is to create strategies and solutions that connect people, data, and technology to design, deliver and operate the most complex projects around the world, enabling a sustainable future.

Continuous growth of the civil engineering community

As a discipline, civil engineering is constantly evolving with the introduction of new technologies and innovations, so there is always something new to learn. It is especially critical for engineers to learn how to build sustainably, to minimise the negative impact on the environment. We believe that by encouraging diversity and inclusion within civil engineering, we're able the find the brightest minds to help us tackle some of the most pressing challenges our planet faces.

At AtkinsRéalis , we recognise that everyone is at a unique stage in their career, so we actively support our people by providing professional development prospects, encouraging them to learn and develop new skills. Within Atkins’ Graduate Development Programme in India, for example, we offer structured learning, allowing graduates to develop an understanding of technical and non-technical aspects of civil engineering and giving them the confidence to evolve into future leaders and experts.
