We have an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and motivated Air Quality Consultant.  We are seeking candidates who are looking to work on some of the largest and most interesting air quality projects in the UK.  The position is permanent with the opportunity for hybrid home/office working with a base in the South East (we are open to discussing alternatives).

Atkins, part of the SNC Lavalin business, is one of the world’s leading design and engineering consultancies, responding to the most technically challenging and time critical infrastructure projects. The Air Quality and Emissions team is part of an award winning, multi-disciplinary environmental consultancy practice, providing provides air quality consultancy and emissions management services in connection with a wide range of land development, transport and energy clients. We work for government departments, multi-national industrial clients, funding agencies and lenders, property developers, infrastructure contractors and regulatory authorities.

We pride ourselves on delivering technically demanding projects to high standards and employing innovative approaches to assessment and reporting.   Our work includes desk and field based air quality, dust, odour impact assessments for planning applications, emissions calculations and dispersion modelling, action planning and mitigation for air and carbon emissions, specialist services for environmental permit applications and Environmental Impact Assessments, and technical advisory services including developing guidance and tools.

We look forward to hearing from aspiring consultants to be based in our South East region. Prior experience of consultancy is not essential, drive and enthusiasm for learning is what we are looking for.

The role

The role will include:

  • Producing air quality and carbon inputs to a range of projects across different sectors;
  • Undertaking air quality, dust and odour impact assessments and reporting;
  • Advising on and identifying solutions for mitigating the effects of air pollution and carbon emissions;
  • Performing air quality surveys to collect, analyse and interpret data;
  • Preparing and delivering air quality reports;
  • Working within defined deadlines and budgets;
  • Managing own workload and supporting management to ensure projects are delivered on time;
  • Providing input to on bids and business development activities to secure work for the team;
  • Continuous development of technical and digital skills; and
  • Working as part of a wider team of other professionals across Atkins, to provide a consistent and integrated service to our clients

About you

  • Higher degree qualification (or equivalent) in a relevant scientific subject;
  • Demonstrable understanding of air quality and/or carbon issues including assessment techniques and standards.
  • Membership of the Institute of Air Quality Management (IAQM), or the necessary qualifications to become a member.
  • Experience of analysing and interpret data using spreadsheet and GIS based tools;
  • Experience of reporting and presenting technical information to acceptable quality;
  • Proficient in standard IT applications, including Word, Excel and Outlook;
  • An understanding of the importance of health and safety risk management;
  • The legal right to work in the UK.

Desirable Criteria

  • Prior experience of working in air quality consultancy;
  • Use of air emissions databases and dispersion models for industrial and/or transport sources (e.g. ADMS, AERMOD);
  • Experience of using statistical analysis packages and/or computer programming language;
  • Knowledge of the interrelationships with other environmental specialisms;
  • CSCS card;
  • A full valid UK driving licence.

These are reviewed with individuals through an annual appraisal development process which is regularly reviewed. You will also be part of our global Technical Networks, which provide a flow of technically orientated information and ideas through the company. Atkins will support you in your professional development, we support staff in achieving and maintaining membership of relevant institutions, this includes paying your annual membership and providing access to training.
