Alternative Delivery Design Manager

We are hiring! Atkins seeks an Alternative Delivery Design Manager to join our team in Atlanta, GA, Raleigh, NC or Charlotte, NC. However, office location within the U.S. is negotiable. In this role. you will have the opportunity to significantly impact the growth of Atkins’ alternative delivery Transportation Business Unit (AD) practice in North America.

Atkins seeks an Alternative Delivery (AD) Design Manager in our Department of Transportation Business Unit (BU) for our US operations titled as a Project Director. In this role, the candidate will have a significant contribution to the growth of Atkins’ AD practice in the U.S.

Atkins’ AD practice spans multiple service lines, including highways and bridges, transit and rail, tolling, ITS, aviation and construction management. The ideal candidate will leverage more than 3,000 technical staff within these sectors to deliver design-build and P3 projects across the U.S.

This position would be ideally based in Atlanta, GA or Raleigh/Charlotte, North Carolina; however, office location within the U.S. is negotiable. Must be willing to accept significant amount of travel within the U.S. with potential for periodic temporary duty when assigned to large pursuit or project.

How will you contribute to the team?

  • The candidate will have proven experience in leading pre-award and post-award services for design-build and P3 projects.  Preference will be given to Design Managers with experience in leading pre-award and/or post-award projects valued greater than $150M in Atlantic Coast states for state DOTs.
  • Proven experience in both highway and rail project delivery is preferred; experience in other service sectors is also of interest. Proven ability to successfully manage large, multi-discipline assignments is required.
  • The candidate will be responsible for leading activities associated with both the pre- and post-award phases of AD projects as listed below.

Pre-award:

  • Work closely with BU Directors, Sector Managers, Division Managers and Sales to leverage existing relationships with builders/contractors, designers and owners to facilitate positioning of Atkins for favorable teaming arrangements and terms and produce a successful proposal and bid.
  • Collaborating with BUs and the technical professionals to ensure pursuit team is prepared to execute and deliver pre-award work activity.
  • Participate in development and negotiation of teaming agreements between both builders/contractors and subconsultants ensuring that Atkins protocols and standards for commercial and risk terms are achieved. Prior to short listing, assist with preparation and review of SOQs.
  • Facilitate work planning activity, oversee pre-award fee development, profitability analysis, cash management, quality management, and risk/change management.
  • Ensure that project controls measures are implemented. Schedule and conduct periodic project reviews to oversee and facilitate successful project delivery performance.
  • Oversee development of post-award scope, schedule and fee.
  • Assist with design services contract development and negotiation.
  • Develop and nurture key builder relationships, often as primary Atkins contact on the pursuit.
  • Lead transition from pre-award to post-award work planning and resource scheduling.
  • May serve as pursuit lead on select large or complex assignments.

Post-award work:

  • Collaborate with BUs on multiple AD projects to direct, oversee and ensure profitability, quality deliverables, and risk/change management.
  • Oversee and facilitate DMs project planning activities to enable profitable and quality delivery of projects.
  • Actively oversee DMs management of budget, schedule and work scope.
  • Facilitate active transportation BU and practice manager engagement in delivery issues.
  • Lead integration of risk/change management processes during delivery, including claims management.
  • Ensure that project controls measures are implemented. Schedule and conduct periodic project reviews to oversee and facilitate successful project delivery performance.
  • May serve as design manager on select large or complex assignments.

What will you contribute?

  • Bachelor's degree in field of practice. Graduate degree preferred. Management coursework and/or MBA a plus.
  • This level may be achieved by technical professionals or managers with twelve years of experience since B.S. or eleven years since M.S., with at least three of these years in the Senior Project Manager position with highly complex project management responsibility.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with a focus on transportation. Graduate degree preferred. Management coursework and/or MBA a plus.
  • Fifteen years of directly related experience with at least five of these years in the Senior Project Manager/Director position with project management responsibility on large, highly complex projects.
  • Successful completion of management role in delivery of one or more projects in excess of $500 million in construction value.
  • Five years of specific experience in delivery of design-build and/or P3 projects, with experience in both pre- and post-award phases.
  • Successful completion of management role in delivery of three or more design-build or P3 projects in excess of $250 million in construction value and one or more in excess of $500 million.
  • P.E. license required.
  • Demonstrated experience in contract negotiations, financial management, fee estimating, risk management, change management and project closeout.
  • Excellent communication skills and collaborative approach that permits effective communication amongst leadership, management, clients, project managers and staff.
  • Very strong financial management, team management, and leadership skills; ability to manage and coordinate efforts of various projects to produce budgeted profits and overall results.
  • Enthusiastic and resilient attitude with drive to achieve and maximize opportunities.
  • Proven success engaging, developing, managing and retaining highly motivated Design and/or Discipline Managers.
  • Facilitate active transportation BUSM and practice manager engagement in delivery issues.
  • Must be willing to accept significant amount of travel within the U.S. with potential for periodic temporary duty when assigned to large pursuit or project.
