We work on behalf of a wide range of clients, ranging from national governments, statutory agencies and local authorities, to charitable trusts, private developers and individuals, often drawing on our design, engineering, sustainability, ecology and other colleagues to provide a comprehensive range of services. We have led the heritage work for projects of all sizes, and have worked on some of the highest profile projects, such as the London 2012 Olympics, HS2, the Transpennine Route Upgrade, A9 Dualling Programme and Thames Tideway, as well as major development schemes and complex flood defence projects, as well as smaller schemes of all types. We have a growing reputation for innovation and imaginative engagement, particularly on large infrastructure programmes.
We are looking for a Senior Archaeological Consultant to join our team based in Glasgow or York, to help deliver our projects throughout the UK and beyond. The role is ideal for someone who has strong technical archaeological capabilities including the management of archaeological fieldwork and the provision of expert advice on archaeology in the planning process; as well as strong EIA skills. The right candidate will be innovative and imaginative in their approach - we are not just looking for someone to join our team, but an individual to help drive its growth, with an innovative approach and the technical expertise we are known for.

The key responsibilities of the role include:
- Providing expert advice to a range of clients and internal teams on a diverse range of projects
- Overseeing, preparing and contributing to environmental statements, heritage statements, desk-based assessments, written schemes of investigation, fieldwork strategies and consent applications
- Management of medium to large scale projects to ensure they are delivered on time and budget
- Design, negotiation, management and delivery of archaeological fieldwork strategies
- Contribution of key technical expertise and knowledge to the team in order to maintain and improve the quality of our work and the expertise of our people
- Management of sub-consultants and archaeological contractors
- Liaison with client teams
- Stakeholder negotiation and liaison
- Sourcing new opportunities and providing technical contribution to tenders.
Experience and skills requirements
Qualifications
- A good first degree in archaeology or closely related discipline, e.g. history, anthropology
- Relevant Masters level or higher qualification in archaeology or heritage management, or considerable experience akin to this level of qualification
Essential
- Full Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists
- Strong background in archaeological fieldwork, reporting, management and monitoring
- Full knowledge of the planning process (including EIA) and be fully conversant with the relevant environmental / heritage legislation and guidance
- Experience of delivering environmental impact assessments and supporting programmes for complex large infrastructure and / or major development schemes
- Robust knowledge of UK archaeology and history
- Willingness to work across the UK in client and Atkins’ offices as fits project requirements
- Experience in a commercial consultancy environment
- Full, clean, UK driving licence
Desired
- Commercial skills and experience
- Technical or specialist subject expert with a focus in archaeology
- Good working knowledge and experience of Microsoft Office packages and GIS
- CSCS accreditation
