Atkins, Balfour Beatty and Egis Road Operations UK  are part of a consortium, creating Connect Plus Services, a unique partnership with a collective strength in highways asset care from finance, through to design, build, maintenance as well as day to day operation.

As part of our 30-year remit to manage and improve the capital’s orbital motorway network, we deliver major improvement projects, such as widening 38 miles of the M25, refurbishing tunnels and bridges, and installing hundreds of variable messaging signs and gantries, helping to maximise the use of the network and deliver more reliable journeys. We also manage the Dartford River crossing, and operate and maintain 440 kilometres of motorway providing our customer and road user with a world-class highway service.

Role Purpose

To support team in the management of the structure’s portfolio on the M25 Orbital Motorway around London.

This is a role to support the Structures Asset Management Team in management of the M25 structures portfolio which includes a wide range of 2500 No. structures across the network. In addition, the role will involve asset management of 5 No. tunnels and associated civils infrastructure. This is an important role, supporting short, medium, and long-term management of these assets to achieve contract performance and asset management objectives.

The role will require working experience of inspection, maintenance and renewals associated with highway structures and tunnel infrastructure. A good understanding of civil engineering principles, asset degradation and maintenance is important for the role. You will be involved in the full asset lifecycle processes including inspection, condition data analysis, identification and prioritisation of renewal works aligned to developing long term strategies.

There will be a need to coordinate and communicate strategy with other operational, design and scheme delivery teams.

Analysis of condition data is a key activity for reviewing and updating long term strategy to identify and forecast renewal and maintenance interventions. This work is supported by CPS Decision Support Tools.  

Additional activities will involve administration and improvement of bridge/tunnel condition data held within Asset Management Systems, ensuring data governance/data quality consistently meets DBFO contractual requirements and assisting with the production of structures 1, 5 and 30 Year Asset Maintenance Plans.

For long term sustainability a key activity will be to identify areas to promote innovation within the long-term Bespoke Maintenance Plans which will have potential to achieve safety, serviceability & economic benefits for our Client.

Successful applicant/s will gain an insight from experienced engineering and asset management professionals. Involvement in the activities above will give successful applicants a good understanding of the end-to-end asset management process from inspection through to delivering the forward renewal work programme. The role would allow suitable experience to be gained to achieve professional membership with Institution of Civil Engineers and/or Institute of Asset Management.

Accountabilities

  • Understand current procedures and ensure all activities are undertaken to the highest standards of health and safety – Zero Harm

  • Assist with formulating effective strategies for structures and tunnel asset management consistent with the business strategy and contract obligations, including hand-back requirements, setting clear priorities and objectives as well as identifying potential threats and opportunities.

  • Develop/update bespoke management plans for strategic assets

  • Develop collaborative working relationship with the on-road teams, advising on technical aspects of strucutres/tunnel maintenance to balance routine/renewal needs for effective asset management.

  • Assist in the management of data and quality checks/controls

  • Assist with Structures/Tunnels Condition Reporting

  • Assist with the development of long term budgeting for 1/5/30 Year Plans

  • Assist with Asset Management Forward Plan 30 year plan preparation

  • Assist with the identification of efficient renewal scheme interventions

  • Liaison with the AMS IT team to improve and maintain data within asset management system.

  • Attend various internal team meetings as and when required

  • Support the delivery of the Business Sustainability activities

  • Assist to collating information for effective performance measurement and controls.

  • Develop collaborative relationships with appropriate stakeholders

Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Structures, Tunnels or related subject.

  • Ideally working towards Professional Qualification, MICE, MIAM, MIStructE, or similar

  • Highways/Structures Maintenance experience

  • Structures/Tunnel construction with maintenance/renewal experience would be advantageous

  • Risk identification and management (particularly in relation to civils infrastructure)

  • Skills in Office Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and/or others

  • Advanced Excel user skills would be advantageous

  • Innovative thinking
