Associate Director

Atkins’ UK Transportation business brings together the capabilities of our Rail, Highway and Local Transport teams, into a single business of 3,000 talented engineering professionals transport planners and consultants. The unique breadth of services in Transportation, combined with our scale, makes Atkins the leading UK transportation infrastructure consultancy. The transport infrastructure sector is experiencing unprecedented levels of investment and Atkins is playing a prime role in key projects across the UK from high-speed rail to major road programmes and digital railway implementation.  But it is not just about today; we are investing and building new capability and services in intelligent mobility, digital asset management and new products for the highways market.  Our teams work closely with Government, national and local authorities, such as Highways England, local highway authorities, TfL, HS2, Network Rail, etc, to deliver integrated transport strategies and solutions that support economic growth and improved journeys for all.

The unique breadth of services in transportation, combined with our scale makes us the leading UK transport engineering consultancy enabling Atkins to inspire our people and collaborate with our clients to shape the future of transportation.

To meet our growth aspirations, we are seeking a high calibre, naturally strong and courageous leader to join our Transportation business. The successful individual will provide guidance on Strategic Highways and Local Transport frameworks and commissions, playing a crucial role in winning, mobilising and leading one or more, of our core local authority frameworks and/or Highways England major commissions across both the North East and North West regions of the UK.

The role covers the following core requirements:

Technical

  • Strong reputation and high-level technical performance
  • Undertakes the technical/professional parts of the role effectively e.g. proven business development, exceptional bid management experience, a competent technical line manager.
  • Builds a good technical/professional reputation inside/outside Atkins through e.g. networking, delivering effective presentations/seminars, writing well prepared papers, or acting as effective expert witness.
  • Delivers an excellent service, carries out the role over and above the expected level and thereby develops a good reputation amongst colleagues.  Attracts clients to Atkins through reputation.
  • Gives others confidence in technical/professional ability and understanding in relation to own discipline
  • Secures opportunities for Atkins in areas other than just their own discipline.

    Commercial

  • Commercially astute with a strong understanding of how to exploit competitive advantage
  • Shows an understanding of the cost/benefit of initiatives
  • Influences others to be cost-conscious/aware
  • Shows a clear understanding of the things that impact on profitability
  • Understands the finances of the business
  • Shows how the company may be able to gain advantages over competitors
  • Manages changes to scope effectively to ensure profitability of project/job not compromised

  • Strong customer focus with high level relationship management skills
  • Develops effective relationships with clients to enable a good understanding of their needs
  • Company player, ensures good relationships/networks are built with other parts of the Company
  • Appreciates the wider implications of ideas/actions outside of own team/business

  • Looks for opportunities to cross-sell/pass on leads
  • Implements systems to monitor customer satisfaction
  • Manages others’ performance to ensure customers receive a good service

    You will need to demonstrate that you fulfil the following requirements

  • Appropriate academic and professional qualifications, including Chartered or Incorporated Engineer and member of relevant professional Institution with significant experience in the transportation market
  • Extensive experience of working with local authorities and or Highways England, as a Framework/Project Director or Manager, delivering consultancy services, expanding scope and services provided as well as delivering best value and innovation
  • Strong presenting, negotiating and influencing skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Experience of building effective networks both internally and external to the organization
  • Experience of developing strong and sustainable relationships with clients and stakeholders, understanding their requirements and aspirations, and working effectively with them to achieve their objectives
  • Ability to provide strong safety leadership within dynamic working environments
  • Strong business acumen with a demonstrable knowledge of identifying potential value creation, and experience in successfully leading and managing organizational change
  • Demonstrable evidence of directing, managing and winning bids.
