Job Title: Design Draughtsman (Mechanical)

We are seeking a Design Draughtsman with a strong technical background to join our Nuclear and Power team in Derby or Sheffield.

About the Team

The Derby and Sheffield team’s work supports a number of key nuclear programmes including the UK Submarine programme, the existing nuclear generation fleet, decommissioning and high integrity structures for new nuclear establishments. The team are also increasing support to a range of exciting Civil Nuclear new build projects such as the UK SMR programme of which Atkins are a major part of the consortium.

We also deliver work to the wider Energy industry, making use of our strong design and analytical skills to deliver projects for other internal or external clients.

What you’ll be doing

Working within our Nuclear and Power business sector in Derby or Sheffield you will be part of a team of mechanical engineering professionals with experience starting with Apprentices all the way up to Chief Engineers. As part of the team you will deliver Atkins projects and programmes, when required working directly for our clients embedded into their major programmes.

Whether we’re delivering high quality engineering and technical services or programme management, we always deliver the solution that’s right for our clients.

You must be competent to undertake technical work individually, or as part of a project team and to take responsibility for managing your own delivery to agreed timescales. The role will entail developing 2D / 3D design solutions from concept to detail design, using leading CAD packages including Autodesk AutoCAD, Inventor and Revit as well as Siemens NX.

Working closely with our clients, you will capture project requirements. You will be accountable for instilling client confidence in Atkins’ project delivery through your professionalism and care. You will support the development, implementation and sharing of best practice through the engineering community and our formal recoding systems.

During your career you will have developed a strong technical foundation and have experience of varied projects/domains and will have a track record of delivering solutions in challenging timescales. You will have a responsible attitude towards safety and security.

You’ll relish taking on a range of challenges, both technical and wider business oriented; all of which help us to run a strong business.

You’ll work with customers and teams to deliver their requirements, you’ll be adaptable and enjoy a challenge. As soon as you’re presented with a problem, you are focused on how to resolve it, whatever it might be.

And overall, you get satisfaction from building relationships, with clients and with colleagues.  You enjoy getting to know people, and working out how you can have a positive impact on them – whether delivering something for a client, or helping to win more work.

In addition to having excellent communication and problem-solving skills you will be able to demonstrate the following:  

  • Mechanical Engineering expertise, HNC qualified or equivalent
  • Some mechanical design experience gained in an industrial environment, where you will have seen the output from your efforts; you’ll have an appreciation of how engineering components and systems are designed and specified
  • Teamwork qualities
  • An appreciation of what’s required for design, ideally when working in safety critical industries, like Nuclear
  • Experience in using one or more of Autodesk AutoCAD, Inventor and Revit, as well as Siemens NX.

You will be used to / comfortable with supporting our Quality Assurance process through review and checking colleagues’ work and presenting your findings / work to clients.

Although the team is based in Derby and Sheffield, the wider Nuclear and Power business has opportunities at locations around the country, internationally and at various client sites. Flexibility on work location and a willingness to undertake secondments to other sites is beneficial.
