Design Engineer-Active travel/Public Transport Projects

Are you ready to take up a vital role in shaping some of our exciting highways projects? How about joining our talented team, where everyone has a voice, and together we face our clients' challenges head-on.

This role offers the opportunity to design and deliver active travel projects across the Midlands for our key national and local government clients.  Alongside delivering highway projects for active travel or public transport facilities, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your own skills as part of a thriving local transport design team.

You’ll be based at either our Birmingham or Nottingham office but with some travel to other Atkins or client locations possible to ensure you can deliver value for our clients.

Key responsibilities

•Providing robust technical design solutions that meet client aspirations.

•Producing design documentation for highway schemes, including sketches, drawings, calculations, reports and specifications to programme and budget.

•Integrating safety in your behaviours and outputs, delivering on our safety values for clients.

•Using your excellent systematic skills to solve engineering problems and applying your engineering judgement to appraise and recommend options.

•Applying highways design expertise for various multi-disciplinary projects in accordance with the Atkins Business Management System and in compliance with quality, safety and environmental standards.

•Staying abreast of industry developments and changes in standards; building excellent professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Key requirements

•BEng, MEng or MSc Degree or equivalent.

•Ability to undertake GG 142 Assessments and Reviews for walking, cycling and horse riding; ability to apply travel design documents CD 143, CD 195, Manual for Streets etc.

•Experience of applied best practice in design for active travel and / or for public transport projects.

•Membership of relevant technical institutions – e.g. ICE, CIHT, CILT, IHE etc; chartered or with a pathway to chartership.

•Experience of working with our key clients, e.g. Local Authorities, Highways England, Developers and/or major Contractors.

•The ability to be flexible in terms of project delivery and working locations.

•Ability to manage and support multiple stakeholder and client relationships.

•Able to demonstrate that you are a resourceful problem solver and excellent communicator with commercial awareness.
