Our Mining & Metallurgy team is growing. As we grow sustainably to serve our clients’ needs, we are looking for a Director of Hydrometallurgy to help lead and grow a team of process engineers and provide tailored process solutions across all phases of metallurgical projects, in ferrous and non-ferrous commodities. This individual will be responsible for the leadership of the hydrometallurgy department for North America.

How will you contribute to the team?

  • Set a leading example of safety and integrity in the workplace. Adhere, support and promote Company Quality Management System, HSE requirements, Ethics and Integrity policies and procedures.
  • Supervise engineering personnel in several offices within the North American region.  Ensure that the Company and Sector’s strategic direction is reflected in the growth and development of the department’s staff within the region.
  • Perform a business development function, leveraging your strong network of clients and experience, to attract new projects and continue to develop clients’ projects.
  • Lead and participate in the preparation and review of competitive project proposals.
  • Establish and maintain good client relations and promote the Company’s reputation as a leading engineering & design consulting firm.
  • Direct the work of professional engineers and process specialists on each of the phases of a project. Provide active leadership and mentoring of professional engineers.
  • Lead hydromet engineering studies, setting and maintain the highest standards, commensurate with internal standards set by SNC-Lavalin.
  • Foster a spirit of enthusiasm, technical innovation, client focus, team building and continual improvement. Ensure a spirit of cooperation across the different offices.
  • Lead the strategic planning and development of the department in North America through a deep understanding of the business environment, competitive pressures, customer requirements and market trends.
  • Plan and control the work of the department by ensuring projects are well staffed per project schedules with personnel possessing the specific technical needs of projects.
  • Maintain and develop the technical skill sets of each of the staff in the department. Ensure department personnel are qualified and have the required experience level to support the project needs of the business. 
  • Make decisions and recommendations on highly technical and complex issues based on recommendations and input from staff members.
  • Promote staff participation in conferences and seminars by supporting or leading the writing of technical papers, serving on technical panels and presenting at conferences.
  • Keep up-to-date with industry standards and technology related to the mining industry.  This also includes department engineering software updates and identification of new tools to improve department efficiencies and Client offerings. Establish innovative approaches to improve department efficiencies in carrying out engineering activities. 
  • Establish a yearly developmental program with each employee that will assure that the team is up-to date with the industry best practices.
  • Perform technical audits on projects in accordance with the established QA program and ensure the timely implementation of all identified corrective actions.
  • Implement effective department communications with all stakeholders.

What will you contribute?

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering from a recognized university.
  • P.Eng status in any Canadian province.
  • 20+ years relevant experience in the mining and metals industry, specifically hydrometallurgy process design, including experience in leadership and supervisory roles.
  • Strong ethical and integrity leadership reputation with peers.
  • Experience in plant operations and commissioning.
  • Must possess broad experience in both process driven studies as well as in the execution of multi-discipline engineering work on large / complex projects across the complete Project lifecycle.
  • Must possess a comprehensive understanding of the mining and metals industry, be thoroughly familiar with typical business and contract models employed in the industry and hold a wide network of professional industry contacts.
  • Demonstrate the implementation of innovative approaches to process engineering execution in past roles.
  • Knowledge of the latest and best practices for process design safety methodologies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
