Director, Environmental Impact Assessment and Community Engagement

SNC-Lavalin is currently seeking a Director of Impact Assessment & Community Engagement (IACE) to join our team for its BC/YT Region. Applying your previous leadership and market experience, you will be leading a team of professionals in sustaining and growing its business and providing high quality services in four key areas: environmental assessments, permitting, biophysical surveys, and construction environmental management and monitoring. As the IACE Director, you will report to the VP Environment and Geoscience, BC/YT and will lead the team’s strategic planning, growth, team development, and provide technical leadership across BC/YT.  Preference for the work location is Vancouver or Burnaby, however alternate locations may be considered.


How will you contribute to the team?

  • Sustain and grow business across various market sectors (Power, Oil & Gas, Infrastructure, Mining, Government)
  • Identify/anticipate/evaluate market trends, opportunities, and industry dynamics
  • Lead development and execution of IACE annual strategic and operational plans
  • Provide quarterly strategic updates to senior management
  • Innovate and enhance our team capabilities and integrated approach
  • Identify and develop strategic partnerships amongst the consulting community
  • Lead and foster IACE regional marketing and business development activities
  • Sustain existing client relationships
  • Develop and sustain new client relationships 
  • Build, grow and develop a team of high performers
  • Identify resource gaps in the team and attract/retain key staff to the team
  • Work collaboratively with E&G Directors, account managers, regional leaders, and technical service leadership to deliver safe, profitable, and sustainable projects and services for our clients
  • P&L responsibility for the group
  • Work with IACE Operational leaders to direct resource allocation for optimal project delivery and client management
  • Safety and ethical leadership
  • Developing annual budget forecasts, and optimizing staff levels to meet budget and project needs
  • Provide routine operational updates through Operational leaders on team performance
  • Guide technical team in successful project delivery applying industry leading best practices and guidance of the provincial and federal regulatory systems for EAs, permits, and studies
  • Serve as the Project Manager (when appropriate) and may oversee and support other PMs
  • Ensure application of quality system principles to project delivery


    What will you contribute?

  • Bachelor's Degree, or preferably Master's Degree, in an environmental or social discipline (e.g., social or environmental science, biophysical discipline, sustainability, planning or related field)
  • Have status or be eligible for status through a professional organization such as the College of Applied Biology, EGBC, etc.   
  • Minimum 15 years’ relevant industry experience and demonstrated success in leading a team in managing environmental assessments, permitting, and related services
  • Strong understanding of the environmental consulting industry drivers (e.g., regulatory processes, market/political trends, client specific issues)
  • Proven experience with regulatory processes under CEAA, BCEAA, Fisheries Act, Navigation Protection Act, Disposal at Sea Regulations; or with OGC and the National Energy Board
  • Highly experienced in environmental management of infrastructure developments, working with engineering teams during the proposal phase or project design/development, and throughout the project lifecycle
  • Ability to create innovative and effective client solutions that are aligned with both sector and regional business objectives
  • Proven experience in building rapport and trust with key clients, business leaders, and team members
  • Experience developing and executing strategic plans
  • Success in responding to Requests for Proposal, Expressions of Interest, Statements of Qualification
  • Proven business development skills, including significant experience building and maintaining productive relationships with a client base
  • Highly developed client management skills with strong understanding of the business development challenges of a consulting services provider
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills and polished presentation and public speaking skills
