Engineer (Structural Analyst)

Atkins’ offshore engineering capability dates back to the 1970’s and we have been at the forefront of the market ever since. Much of our capability originated in the oil and gas sector, and we are still heavily involved in this area. However, we have successfully transferred many of our skills onto a growing number of fixed and floating offshore renewables projects. 

The Role

Due to continued growth in projects, we are looking for an outstanding candidate to join an offshore wind structural design and analysis team within our Engineering and Consulting Services business.  As a Structural Analyst, you will have a strong background in detailed stress and structural analysis with the ability to analyse and report on complex analysis models using a range of analysis packages.  You will be also be responsible for guiding and mentoring junior engineers. Experience of offshore structures projects in either the Renewables or Oil & Gas industry would be an advantage.

The project work will primarily involve analysis of offshore structures, such as wind turbine foundations and oil & gas structures.  We are engaged in a broad range of projects and, while our operations focus on fixed and floating offshore structures, we also have the adaptability to support the nuclear energy market.  Many of our projects involve multi-disciplinary design teams, drawing on expertise from Atkins/SNC-Lavalin offices around the world, and the ability to engage proactively and constructively with colleagues from a range of backgrounds is important.

It is expected that you will make a significant contribution to the overall capability of the team in the area of structural analysis. You will have experience of working in accordance with engineering design codes and standards, as well as working from first principles based on a strong theoretical understanding.  You will be able to interpret and report on the results of analyses to provide insight and conclusions with accompanying discussion suitable for both internal and external clients.  It is also expected that you will have a strong attention to quality assurance.

You enjoy working on multiple fast-paced projects, balancing the need for high quality analysis with the need to deliver within required time and cost budgets.

You will also have a range of the following desirable experience and attributes:

Key Requirements

  • Degree qualified in Civil, Structural or Mechanical Engineering to Masters level.
  • Extensive experience in either:
  • Nonlinear stress analysis, using analysis packages such as ABAQUS, ANSYS, etc.
  • Structural analysis using analysis packages such as Bentley SACS, Sesam, etc.
  • An ability to solve complex structural integrity and design problems
  • Motivation to teach and guide junior members of your team.
  • Experience of ensuring rigorous quality assurance of all outputs
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with an ability to write accurate, detailed and concise technical reports (e.g. design substantiations, bases of analysis and calculations)

Additional Information

This position is based in our Bristol office. However, travel to other company and client sites may occasionally be necessary as part of the role.
