Engineering Technician - Scotland

We are currently seeking an Engineering Technician to join our Bridges and Civils team within our Transportation Practice, based in Edinburgh or Glasgow. The successful candidate will support our team working on a number of exciting, high-profile projects and frameworks. This includes A9 Dualling, Network Rail’s CP6 Maintenance Programme and various projects for Local Authorities through the Scotland Excel Framework.  The team also supports wider projects throughout the UK, as well as a range of local market projects, including East West Rail Phase 2, HS2, A465 Phases 5 and 6, Highways England East Region DSC and the Central Rail Systems Alliance.  

Using your technical and delivery skills, you will be responsible for delivering a variety of civil and structural computer aided design and modelling packages for new build highways and rail schemes, renewals schemes, assessment works and asset management schemes. Your duties will include the production of drawing and modelling packages, to budget, to programme, and in accordance with Atkins’ quality assurance systems.

You will have a background in civil engineering design, and an interest in the delivery of multi-disciplinary projects within highway or rail environments. You will ideally be familiar with working on projects at varying stages of development from feasibility to detailed design.

You will be able to demonstrate delivery of engineering drawings using relevant CAD and BIM software for multidisciplinary railway and highway design projects. You will work in a dynamic environment as part of a wider team. You will have a background in the UK rail or highway sector together with a track record of successful delivery on either railway or highway engineering design projects.

Qualifications:

  • A BTEC/HNC or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering subject.
  • EngTech professional qualification with the ICE or working towards the EngTech qualification.

Expected Criteria

The role will be varied, requiring a balance of relevant industry experience, technical ability, communication and stakeholder management skills. Expected criteria are:

Responsibilities:
Technical

  • Production of technical drawings using relevant CAD/BIM software
  • Assisting with site surveys and other site activities.
  • Supporting engineers with the development of design solutions.

Stakeholder

  • Liaising with customers in a responsive and client focused manner.
  • Liaison with Clients and attendance at client meetings

Management

  • Responsible for completion of assigned tasks to time and cost.
  • Adhering to the company’s Quality, Safety and Environmental procedures.
  • Ensuring compliance with company CAD and Digital Engineering standards

People

  • Taking responsibility for your own development of new skills.


Essential Criteria:

  • A BTEC/HNC or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering subject.
  • EngTech professional qualification with the ICE or working towards the EngTech qualification.
  • Experience of preparing engineering sketches and plans from conception through to construction.
  • Robust IT skills, proficient in the use of MS Office and relevant software including AutoCAD and at least one of either Revit or Microstation.
  • Proven ability to deliver work within set timeframes.
  • Flexibility for occasional periods working away from normal office location
     

Desirable Criteria:

  • Knowledge of CADS-RC design and detailing software
  • Knowledge of structures design standards and Eurocode detailing rules
  • Experience of Network Rail civil engineering design and projects.
  • Experience of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) Highways Standards.
  • Ability to produce drawings containing BIM and 3D information (AECOsim, Civils 3D or Revit)
  • Ability to produce reinforcement bar bending schedules
  • Knowledge of Projectwise, Revit and Microstation
