We are now seeking to expand our team of fluvial geomorphologists and catchment scientists. We have several openings available. As a Fluvial Geomorphologist, you can expect to undertake a range of river and catchment assessments, both nationally and internationally. We also frequently design and supervise river restoration and nature-based engineering schemes including natural flood management, river realignments and erosion management. All drive tangible improvements within river catchments throughout the UK and overseas. As a senior member of our team we hope you would contribute to developing the strategic direction of our sustainable river management business, developing business opportunities and managing projects.

We value flexible working within our team and would encourage working from different offices across the region, flexible working hours and working from home as part of regular working. We also support part time workers who make up an essential component of our team. The role would preferably be based from our Oxford, Warrington, Glasgow, Bristol, Epsom or Peterborough offices but working with key specialists from our other national office bases (including London, Derby and Swansea).

- A degree in a relevant discipline and a relevant post-graduate qualification (with focus on Water/Catchment Management/River processes).
- Experience in undertaking and leading a range of geomorphological studies including catchment scale assessments down to local, reach based assessments. Candidates will need to demonstrate that this includes significant field experience in different river environments across the UK.
- Experience in undertaking the design of river realignments, restoration or habitat creation schemes.
- Proven ability to undertake and deliver a thorough technical investigation, presenting findings in a well -structured, concise argument (verbal or written), supported by evidence.
- Proven ability to write reports in concise, plain English appropriate to audiences ranging from technical specialists to the general public.
- Experience in leading Water Framework Directive (WFD) compliance assessments and integrating these into the Environmental Assessment process.
- Comfortable working as part of a multi-disciplinary technical team that is spread across multiple locations.
- Numerate, literate and familiar with IT and software appropriate to the tasks undertaken.
- A valid driving license and availability for travel across the UK and occasionally overseas where appropriate.
Appointment will be based on Chartered status (e.g. CEnv, CSci, C.WEM) and relevant experience of:
- project, programme and/or financial management;
- bid development and work winning;
- technical leadership within environmental water management; and
- client and stakeholder liaison.
- Experience of working on major infrastructure projects, either in an environmental assessment, design, or supervision capacity.
- Experience in sediment modelling would be beneficial, but not essential.
- Experience in some of the following areas: aquatic ecology, hydrology, catchment management and hydraulic modelling.
- Has an enthusiasm for geomorphology and associated disciplines and developing new ways of processing, analysing and presenting scientific information in the digital age.
- To support as well as lead the delivery of a wide range of environmental water management projects with a focus on geomorphological assessment, WFD compliance assessments, habitat design, management and restoration/realignments, catchment science and environmental assessment/EIA through collaborative working with other Atkins’ specialists.
- To support enquiries and provide input to and lead bids for the future success of the business.
- Liaise with internal and external project teams to deliver the best environmental options.
- Maintain excellent professional relationships which can lead to secure repeat business. We actively encourage strong, direct relationships with our clients, so you will also assist in building networks that will underpin new business.
- Managing projects within the team.
- To manage and mentor junior staff across the business as appropriate.
- To work effectively as part of a team and with other professionals (environmental scientists, ecologists, engineers, planners) throughout SNC Lavalin’s Atkins business to provide a consistent and integrated service to our clients.
