Job Description

The Role

We are looking for Geologist / Subsurface Engineer to support the technical delivery of our salt cavern storage projects in the European and UK hydrocarbon and renewable energy storage markets.

You will:

Use your knowledge and experience of geology / subsurface environment to support the development of solutions to complex technical issues, communicating these solutions to clients and managing them through to implementation.  Your knowledge and experience will by sufficiently diverse in the subsurface disciplines to allow you to actively participate in the resolution of subsurface engineering problems across a vaired field of disicplines (e.g. geology, wells, solution mining etc.).

Deliver our technical services ensuring the solutions you deliver are technically excellent, commercially viable and aligned with the latest health and safety requirements.

Cultivate a strong working relationship with our existing clients to consolidate the services we provide and develop these into a wider Atkins offering.

Support the Subsurface Asset Engineer in developing business with new clients locally and internationally to secure the future pipeline of the storage team and develop the wider business case for continued growth of the team.

Play an active role in the development of a Germany based salt cavern engineering team, ensuring you are pro-active in the development of your own skills base for both the services currently provided to our clients and also those that may be required to support the energy storage market in the future.

 

The individual will work within our Atkins Energy Germany business, predominantly based at our clients office in Wilhelmshaven. Flexible working is available.

 

Fundamentally this individual will be required to support the Germany and UK based energy storage market, in the technical delivery of projects. You will be expected to integrate both sound engineering knowledge and practice with an appreciation of technical and safety risk implications.

Requirements

 

Qualifications

A strong academic background with a relevant degree (ideally MSc or equivalent) in Geological Sciences.

Essential Criteria

Demonstrable experience working in a technical role.

Knowledge and understanding of geological settings.

Experience in the analysis and interpretation of geological and geophysical information from sources such as survey data, well logs, boreholes, and aerial photos.

Experience of geological and geophysical studies to provide information for use in regional development, site selection, and the development of projects.

Demonstrable engineering experience and a good understanding of project delivery.

Knowledge of applicable regulations including (but not limited to):

German Mining Law

Borehole Regulations

An interest in emerging fields of energy engineering and technology (e.g. energy storage such as Hydrogen, compressed air and carbon capture).

Ability to understand a wide range of processes through review of P&IDs, operating instructions, etc.

The self-motivation to perform without close supervision.

Positive outlook and approachable manner.

Drive and ambition to support the development of a market leading business.

Good report writing skills and the ability to self-check and to produce high quality and accurate work. Commitment to the application of quality assurance and safety standards.

A willingness to travel on short assignments both in Germany and overseas.

Native German speaker and ability to communicate in English in both verbal and written forms.

 

Desirable Criteria

Knowledge and experience of the salt cavern industry including:

Structural geology of salt deposits and salt domes

Solution mining and cavern re-watering

Cavern suspension and abandonment requirements

Experience of assessing cavern integrity, defining potential leak paths to environment and developing integrity management solutions.

Knowledge of well architecture including design, drilling, cementing, completion, suspension and abandonment.

Experience of working with geographically dispersed teams.
