We are seeking a Health Physicist to join our team serving our work remediating nuclear facilities, fuel processing operations and areas impacted by these operations.  This is an intermediate position (minimum of 3 years of related experience) that will focus on the field of nuclear decommissioning and remediation of impacted sites.  The educational requirements of the position include a degree in health physics, engineering or sciences (biology, physics or chemistry). 

The candidate will be working as part of a team that includes Senior Health Physicists from our Nuclear Division, Remediation Specialists from our Environment and Geoscience Division and our Construction Group.  It is anticipated that the project work will include high profile projects in Ontario with extensive interactions with government agencies, officials and community members. 

This position will be based in Durham and Northumberland a counties, primarily in Port Hope at the commencement of work.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting multiple low-level radioactive waste remediation projects technically at the sites and supporting the field teams and project management
  • Preparing and implementing radiation protection plans for sites undergoing remediation
  • Undertaking construction radiation safety inspections of monitoring programs
  • Overseeing radiation surveys including the direction of and assistance to radiation technicians at the remediation sites 
  • Providing training, direction and support to excavation and other contractors respecting radiation protection
  • Working as the leader and technical advisor of field teams for multiple projects
  • Implementing a dosimetry program including providing dose estimates
  • Preparing and implementing standard operating procedures for direct-reading radiation detection instruments including validating their use through calculations and validating safety precautions
  • Preparing calculations for the shipment of low level radioactive waste
  • Preparing reports
  • Provide support to the project to complete work plans and deliverables and ensure the consistency of scopes, budgets and schedules within the commitment of team performance;
  • Proactively monitor the work performance, identify any potential risks/gaps of scopes of work performed;
  • Able to drive and provide the technical solutions from the challenges of task work under his/her expertise areas;
  • Have familiarity with work procedures of QA requirements, including being able to provide the instructions to the team member for QA consistencies;
  • Understand and apply the related Nuclear regulatory documents, Nuclear codes and standards;
  • Perform as required in obtaining design inputs and basis, assumptions validations, design verifications;
  • Propose the scope of work changes and/or design changes with solid technical validation in both schedule and cost-effective aspects;
  • Support lead or management in identifying resources and staff training requirements, and provide the inputs/feedback on performance appraisals for the team staff;
  • Provide technical guidance in his/her areas, working instructions and training to junior professionals.
  • Proactively self-started and self-monitor the work performance, identify any potential risks/gaps of scopes of work performed;

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in sciences, engineering or health physics from an accredited educational facility.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in the nuclear industry conducting operational radiation protection including the following:
    • Strong nuclear safety culture
    • RP instrument setup, calibration, use the trouble shooting
    • Radiation dose assessment for external and internal radiation hazardous
    • Decontamination of personnel and equipment
    • Emergency response to radiological upset conditions
    • Shielding calculations
    • Airborne contamination monitoring
    • Transport of dangerous goods, class 7
    • Activity assessments for transport or dose reporting
    • ALARA planning and review
    • Work planning, pre and post job briefs
    • Experience teaching highly technical topics to a variety of participant categories
    • Procedural document review, revision, approval
  • Extensive site experience in radiation protection support
  • Demonstrated proficiency in providing radiation protection support
  • Strong inter-personal skills; effective in a team environment.
  • A quick learner able to become familiar with work procedures, plans and programs of existing projects in a short period of time
  • Capable of understanding and appropriately applying prescribed safety and technical procedures and protocols
  • Knowledge and experiences in the application of nuclear regulatory documents, nuclear codes and standards
  • Knowledge and experiences in the application of nuclear safety culture, concepts and philosophies to assigned tasks;
  • Effectively and efficiently communicate (verbally and in writing) with team members with good interpersonal skills for the work team , inter-disciplines, sub-contractors and project management
  • English proficiency in reading and writing, and good communication skills, specifically, strong written skills in order to complete detailed, descriptive and comprehensive field notes in legible hand-writing
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills
  • Self-motivated, independent worker
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Detail and accuracy oriented
  • Some of the work will take place on construction sites and will require the candidate to wear construction and radiation protection safety gear
  • Willing to undertake field work year-round, primarily within Port Hope in the next few years
  • The candidate will be required to obtain necessary Government of Canada security clearance upon hiring
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
