Highways Design & Development Lead

As a Highways Engineer in our Transportation team, you'll be pivotal in implementing ideas that shape the future of how we move. We work on a large variety of significant and challenging UK projects, such as Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route, A14 Cambridge-Huntingdon, and Human Drive. You'll feel a great sense of pride in shaping high-quality civil and structural designs across new build, renewal, maintenance, and assessment works. Collaborate with national and international design teams, using your insight and leadership to generate positive, sustainable impacts on society and the environment.

Your Purpose

  • You will be a leader in highways design and engineering, who leads and takes ownership for design delivery and defining and winning projects or packages.
  • You'll develop opportunities for securing, leading and delivering significant highway and active travel infrastructure that meet client ambitions and exceed their expectations, drawing on both engineering and commercial skills.
  • You’ll build and lead teams to create lean and innovative highways designs, using your excellent analytical skills to solve engineering problems and applying your engineering judgement to appraise and recommend options and to check and review deliverables.
  • You’ll stay abreast of industry developments and changes in standards; maintaining and developing excellent professional relationships with clients, preparing fee offers and presenting to internal and external stakeholders.
  • You’ll build great client relationships, understanding and developing their needs and developing scopes, leading pricing, programming and taking responsibility for coordinating and delivering proposals as project or framework manager.
  • You’ll lead highway design delivery in accordance with the Atkins Business Management System and complying with quality, safety and environmental standards; overseeing the production of design documentation for highway schemes, including sketches, drawings, calculations, reports and specifications to programme and budget.
  • You’ll work collaboratively across the Atkins business and with our partner organisations and contribute to pastoral care and development of more junior staff by technical training and mentoring.

    What you can bring

  • BEng / MEng or MSc degree in civil engineering or equivalent.
  • Incorporated or Chartered status and membership of the ICE, CIHT or APM.
  • Experience of working with our key clients, e.g. Local Authorities, Highways England, Developers and/or Contractors. Experience of leadership within D&B contracts would be a particular advantage.
  • Able to demonstrate excellent understanding of client needs and strong client relationships, for example in leading significant projects or frameworks.
  • Able to demonstrate responsibility for leading highways design teams and / or packages.
  • Able to demonstrate in-depth understanding of BIM, and its place in securing and delivering work for our clients.
  • Able to demonstrate that you can derive design briefs and manage the internal technical supply chain across a range of project sizes, including setting budget, programme and quality tolerances.
  • Able to demonstrate that you are a resourceful problem solver and excellent communicator with excellent market understanding.
