As a graduate consultant on our prestigious 3-year programme you will help to support and deliver the technical aspects of a variety of multidisciplinary designs across a range of challenging and exciting projects in the UK and internationally. We operate across a range of markets including Transportation, Cities & Development, Energy, Environment & Geoscience, and Water.
As transport infrastructure experience’s unprecedented investment, join us in Intelligent Mobility and Smart Technologies (IMST) and help us to shape the future of transport. We are a growing practice of around 100 engineers, consultants and technical specialists, working with emerging technologies to push the boundaries and drive innovation. Our projects range from driverless cars, data exploitation, and transport technologies, to roads of the future, change programmes and urban / inter-urban traffic management. Our team need to look at challenges very differently to connect people and place and this requires a huge variety of skills and capabilities. Providing simple solutions to complex problems, it’s an exciting journey and you can play a lead role.

What are the roles?
We are looking for two types of graduates for our practice: IMST Graduate Consultants and Traffic Signals Graduate Engineers.
For the IMST Graduate Consultant role we are looking for a motivated, goal-oriented graduate who has an appetite for innovation and change. Your core skills will include strong communication, confidence working on your own initiative and the ability to manage priorities effectively. You are a high-energy individual with a collaborative spirit, and you are keen to develop knowledge and experience in transport technologies. Known for approaching things in different ways, you must be creative and curious. You’re a learner – compelled to make the best of your abilities and talents as well as to continually build upon them.
For the Traffic Signals Graduate Engineer role we are looking for a graduate who has an appetite for hands-on design and commissioning of traffic technology. Your core skills will include good attention to detail, an interest in solving real-life problems and confidence working in a street environment. You like troubleshooting technical problems and you are keen to develop knowledge and experience as a designer and engineer. You want to make a real contribution to people’s lives improving traffic in towns, cities and motorways.
Where could you work?
As a recent graduate you could find yourself in one of the following locations;

Degree requirements: 2.1 bachelors or 2.2 Master’s degree across a wide variety of degree disciplines such as:
• Engineering – Civil, Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic, Telecommunications, Systems, Automotive, Robotics, Control and Instrumentation, Software, Design and Manufacturing Engineering or similar
• Planning – Transport Planning
• Psychology – Behavioural/Organisational
• Humanities – English, Politics, Business Management and Social Sciences
• Sciences, Maths and others – Physics, Computer Science, Geography, Maths, Environmental Science, Economics and GIS
Or for postgraduate students disciplines of interest include, but are not limited to: Behavioural/organisational psychology (MSc), Transport management, Air transport management, Logistics (MSc), Ergonomics (MSc), Smart cities, (MSc), Digital technologies (MSc), Intelligent vehicles (MSc), Risk management (MSc).
What will you do?
When you join our team as an IMST Graduate Consultant, you will have a role in delivering the technology systems that manage and optimise tomorrow’s transport infrastructure, driving innovative projects from smart motorways to control centres and real-time passenger information. There is also the opportunity to design proof of concepts and run trials to test what the future of travel will look like. You might have heard of projects called Flourish and Venturer - these are real examples of putting early design driverless cars to the test and tackling the real questions around public acceptance, safety, insurance and end-user experience.
You’ll be
• Developing our technical offerings and capabilities for IMST-related services
• Supporting client engagement on new transport technologies, such as intelligent infrastructure, integrated platforms, traffic management systems and multi-modal journey planning
• Contributing to new value propositions and testing existing propositions
• Growing skills in technical or project / programme management delivery roles, working with a multi-disciplinary team to deliver a project to time and budget
• Contributing to business development activities, including bidding for new projects with clients
• Developing user requirements through discussion with clients, other stakeholders and the project team
• Writing technical notes and project reports for clients
• Preparing documents and drawings in accordance with client and Atkins’ requirements
When you join our IMST team as a Traffic Signals Graduate Engineer you will work with government, local authorities and private sector partners to improve traffic performance and develop integrated transport strategies to ensure the urban areas we live in continue to work. Traffic Signals Engineering is a multidisciplinary field that draws on traffic theory, electrical engineering, civil engineering, control systems engineering, software engineering and transport planning. The Atkins Traffic Signals Team design complex traffic control systems using Traffic Signals, CCTV, Variable Message signs and other traffic management technologies to ensure the safety of all road users, reduce delays and deliver better, more predictable journeys to motorists and pedestrians.
You’ll be
• Using AutoCAD to design traffic signal schemes from inception to operation,
• Working on street to undertake surveys, support installation, testing and optimisation
• Supporting engagement with partners, suppliers and maintainers
• Contributing to business development activities, including bidding for new projects with clients and supporting the team development
• Finding solutions to engineering problems, optimising traffic at different scenarios with different constrains
• Using software to model traffic, configure and test traffic management systems
• Writing technical notes and project reports for clients
• Preparing documents and drawings in accordance with client and Atkins’ requirements
You will be assigned a mentor within our team and you will have opportunities for on the job and structured training. We will also support you in attaining professional qualifications and chartership.
What are we looking for?
For the IMST Graduate Consultant role we are looking for these qualities and skills:
- Passion and understanding for working in a consultancy environment, with the ability to work with clients and internal stakeholders
- Drive and determination to achieve professional accreditation
- Excellent communication and relationship building skills, with the confidence to work on your own initiative or as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to apply your technical knowledge to analyse problems and create innovative solutions
- An interest in developing digital and technology-based solutions
- A flexible approach to travel as our projects and training may take you to a variety of locations in the UK and possibly abroad
For the Traffic Signals Engineering role we are looking for these qualities and skills:
- Strong attention to detail and numerical reasoning skills with an interest to understand how technology works
- You like hands-on work, fixing faulty equipment, learning to code and commissioning new technology
- Good communicator with the ability to present complex ideas to diverse audiences
- Ability to analyse complex problems and provide innovative solutions within physical and regulatory constraints
- A curious interest and keen to develop knowledge and experience in design and engineering in transport technologies
- Confidence in working on-street following safety protocols
- A flexible approach to travel and working hours as our projects may take you to a variety of locations in the UK. You need to have a clean driving licence or in the process of getting one in the next three months.
