Health Physicist

Candu Energy Inc. are looking for Health Physicist to be part of our team. Reporting to the Radiation Protection (RP) Manager, the Health Physicist/Regulatory Affairs Specialist­­ will provide operational health physics and regulatory affairs support for Sheridan Park, and Montecorte Facility in line with the requirements listed in the Radiation Protection Program Manual and facility operational licence.

How will you contribute to the team?

  • Contribute to the implementation of the Radiation Protection (RP) Program
  • Provide operational health physics services for Candu
  • Provide technical support and consultative advice to line and facility management
  • Develop and implement elements of the RP Program
  • Provide timely information and updates to the RP Manager and to the facilities line management
  • Identify radiological and conventional hazards at and around the work site
  • Assess radiological hazards to station staff and members of the public
  • Prepare, review and revise RP procedures, as necessary
  • Perform RP compliance inspections
  • Prepare radioactive material handling permits
  • Conduct radiation exposure planning and control process and procedures
  • Perform as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) assessments and post-job reviews
  • Conduct radiological safety and dose assessments
  • Prepare, review and/or approve radiological work plans/procedures
  • Prepare/review technical specifications for the selection and procurement of radiation and contamination measuring and monitoring equipment, as necessary
  • Assist in site processes for the set-up calibration and troubleshooting of RP instrumentation
  • Conduct in-field gamma spectroscopy, as necessary
  • Assist with decommissioning/decontamination methods and techniques

What will you contribute?

  • Relevant Honours' degree in Science, Engineering or Health Physics
  • Minimum of 2 years of practical experience in Health Physics or related disciplines.
  • Must possess Green badge or Group 1 qualification
  • Experience with providing Radiation Protection oversight to work performed under an approved ALARA plan
  • Knowledgeable of regulations and guidelines of radiological protection standards
  • Knowledgeable and good understanding of Radiation Protection philosophies, procedures, equipment and techniques used both in theory and practice
  • Sound knowledge of radiological safety systems and methodology
  • Working knowledge of project management practices, work processes and technology, as well as radiation safety management standards
  • Good knowledge of radiological inspection and auditing principles
  • Proficient in Microsoft computer software with knowledge and use of databases
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to build and foster effective working relationships
  • A team player with strong commitment to maintain training principles and objectives
  • Strong passion for achieving safety and quality, and sustained enthusiasm for meeting and improving safety and performance
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and respond in a timely manner to changing demands and scheduling requirements with the ability to be involved in a range of activities, from routine to complex assignments, requiring initiative
  • Ability to be impartial in conducting training activities and using knowledge and skill for the enhancement of the training program
  • Ability to perform work under various degrees of supervision, as necessary
  • Ability to perform shift work or irregular work schedule, as necessary
  • Ability to perform term assignments at other Candu locations or host facilities, domestic or abroad, as necessary
  • Must be designated as a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW) or willing to be designated as a NEW
