SNC-Lavalin’s Ports and Marine team within the Engineering, Design and Project Management of SNC-Lavalin provides specialized ports and marine engineering expertise to a wide variety of clients, including other Business Units within the company.  We provide a full range of engineering services for local, national and international projects.

 

As a result of ongoing demand, we are looking for a qualified Junior Coastal Specialist to join our team.

 

Your primary role will be to provide qualified coastal engineering support, by virtue of your specialized education and project experience.  Projects will include a wide range of infrastructure projects of all types.  Your role will include working collaboratively with other members of the team to ensure that the services provided to all clients are innovative, effective, and practical and represent leading expertise and knowledge.

 

Responsibilities

  • Development of innovative and effective approaches to the solution of client problems.
  • Planning, guidance and development of technology aids for the solution of coastal engineering problems.
  • Providing guidance to technical (CAD) support staff on aspects related to project work.
  • Contributing to or preparing project documentation including design briefs, design criteria, engineering reports, drawings and specifications to summarize the approach taken and project relevant results.
  • Managing project scope, budgets, schedules and deliverables.
  • Undertaking conceptual, preliminary and detailed engineering assignments (including site investigation and construction engineering related services), as a member of a project team, as required by the project.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 1 - 3 years of coastal engineering experience, in an owner, consulting or contractor role.
  • Eligibility or registration as a Professional Engineer, or an EIT with APEGBC or an equivalent jurisdiction recognized by APEGBC.
  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in Civil, Coastal or Hydro technical Engineering.
  • A functional understanding of typical ports, marine or offshore engineering with a familiarity with geotechnical engineering, meteorology, vessel and port operations and marine environmental issues and disciplines is considered an asset.
  • A functional understanding of water resource engineering including: river engineering, tidal and estuarine engineering, hydrology, numerical and physical coastal modeling principles.
  • A functional understanding with land use planning and policy guidance related to flooding, climate change and sea level rise is an asset.
  • Familiarity with CAD, GIS and visualizations tools and software.
  • Familiarity with office productivity, project accounting and personnel management software applications.
  • An ability to work both independently and to prioritize multiple and multi-disciplinary projects and project teams.
  • Familiar with industry standard coastal engineering software.
  • Familiar with marine design codes and standards.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and a positive problem solving and collaborative approach.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.  Multilingual skills considered an asset.
  • Experience with preparation of clear and comprehensive reports, technical notes and client or public presentations.
  • Preparation and presentation of professional conference or technical journal articles is an asset.
  • Willingness to travel on short-term (day, week, month long) assignments as necessary.
  • Ability to start immediately.
