Offshore Wind Software Developer

Atkins’ offshore engineering capability dates back to the 1970’s and we have been at the forefront of the market ever since. Much of our capability originated in the oil and gas sector, and we are still heavily involved in this area. However, we have successfully transferred many of our skills onto a growing number of fixed and floating offshore renewables projects. 

The Role

Due to continued growth in projects, an opportunity has arisen for a Software Developer to join our Resources team based at our offices in Bristol, Epsom or London and work as part of our multi-disciplinary offshore wind team. This team is working at the forefront of the offshore wind industry to develop concept, FEED and detailed designs of major offshore wind assets together with developing innovative solutions for repair and upgrades.

We are looking for software developers who have a good understanding and experience of working alongside engineers from other disciplines to solve engineering problems.

You will be leading the development and maintenance of software packages applicable to the design and integrity management of Offshore Wind Turbine foundation structures. This will require you to:

  • Work with stakeholders to gather and define the requirements for new applications.
  • Design applications that are easily maintainable while making use of the existing code base and extending and improving it where possible.
  • Develop objected-oriented Python applications to meet the agreed requirements while ensuring that software is suitably tested, validated and verified.
  • Implement Python applications to be numerically efficient using packages such as numpy, pandas, multiprocessing.
  • Manage the code base using source control management systems such as Mercurial or Git.
  • Develop easy-to-use user interfaces and suitable user documentation to ensure usability and accessibility of developed toolkits.
  • Comply with internal and industry software best practice guidance and standards.

You will also be responsible for managing and improving the deployment of software:

  • Working with Corporate IT team to develop cloud usage best practice (MS Azure, local LINUX team, etc.)
  • Ensuring applications can be deployed in suitable computing environments e.g. compiling for Windows.
  • Progressing the way in which full and partial applications are deployed e.g. web APIs and services.                

You will be comfortable working on and leading the development of a range of tools for structural engineering design and analysis projects, either with local colleagues or working as part of a wider multi-disciplinary team located across different offices. You will deliver high quality technical work, ensure compliance with relevant best practice procedures and contribute to continual improvement of the design approach and methodology.

The Person
With excellent communication, stakeholder management and influencing skills, you will be able to build relationships effectively and assist in winning work from new and existing clients.
Comfortable at leading tasks, you are keen to support, mentor and develop the capability of the team. You are also a motivator and take personal responsibility in achieving the best from the team to ensure client satisfaction. You are comfortable and adaptable to working in new and changing environments. You have good attention to detail and are able to make sound judgements under pressure.
You have a strong background in software development with the following minimum qualifications
University degree, either Engineer degree honours or equivalent in civil, mechanical, structural, naval architecture or similar; Or/and Software Engineering or similar.

The following skills are considered key for this role:

  • Experience in developing applications using Python.
  • Experience in deployment of applications to cloud computing environments e.g. MS Azure.
  • Experience interfacing with finite element analysis package APIs e.g. SESAM, Abaqus, ANSYS are desirable.

Experience in the following would also be desirable:

  • Development using web-based technologies e.g. HTML/CSS, JavaScript (jQuery, three.js and other frontend frameworks).
  • Fortran development.
