We are currently accepting resumes for future opportunities for an Ornithologist, based in Regina, Saskatoon or Winnipeg to help plan, manage, and conduct environmental impact assessments and environmental management on a variety of projects within western Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, manage and conduct avian surveys/inventories and assessments (experience in other disciplines is an asset) in accordance with applicable protocols
  • Act as a key resource and client contact for diverse set of environmental assessment, management or permitting projects
  • Supervise field work and mentor junior and intermediate field staff
  • Assist in or lead the preparation of regulatory approval and permitting applications
  • Prepare environmental protection and mitigation plans to facilitate regulatory approvals
  • Prepare technical reports associated with regulatory approvals or compliance requirements
  • Prepare proposals and cost estimates
  • Ensuring technical quality of work including field methodology and review of client deliverables (proposals, reports and mapping)
  • Establish and maintain relationships with government and regulatory agencies

Requirements

  • University degree in biology/ecology or related studies with a minimum of 7 years’ experience conducting and managing avian studies
  • Knowledge and understanding of prairie and boreal forest ecosystems, vegetation, and wildlife habitat
  • Proven knowledge of the Species at Risk Act, the Migratory Birds Convention Act, the Wildlife Act (AB and SK) and Regulations, the Wildlife Habitat Protection Act, and other relevant federal and provincial legislation and requirements 
  • Working knowledge of the current species detection survey protocols in Saskatchewan. Knowledge of relevant protocols in Alberta is strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to develop, manage and conduct avian studies in a variety of ecosystems
  • Proven ability to develop and implement practical mitigation and management plans as a component of environmental management planning and implementation
  • Demonstrated professionalism and commitment to continuous improvement
  • Recognized ability to work independently and succeed in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team environment  
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to write and/or review complex biological studies and reports
  • Professional designation is an asset (e.g. P. Biol. or R. P.Bio.)
  • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) experience in Saskatchewan and/or Alberta is an asset
  • Consulting experience in Saskatchewan and/or Alberta is an asset
  • Broad knowledge of other biology disciplines (vegetation, wetlands, wildlife etc.) is an asset 
  • Some work for this position may be in remote locations for extended periods of time and may require overtime, weekends and variable hours
  • Computer skills - MS Office
