We support the full lifecycle of an enhancement project covering feasibility studies to assess options, concept designs and industrial design schemes, engineering design and assessments of fire safety, design assurance and safety assurance, materials procurement, and installation programme management.    To support SNC-Lavalin’s growing Engineering Design team, working as a Principal Electromechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting the technical delivery of electromechanical design solutions for rolling stock. You will be working on industry-leading rolling stock modification projects within a global company, with clients throughout the rail sector.              

The ideal candidate will have a solid and extensive background of working as a lead design engineer within the rail industry or similar engineering industry. You will provide line management to a small team of design engineers, ensuring that staff are appropriately utilised and support their individual development. At a project level, you will work as a Lead Engineer/Design Manager, liaising between the Project Manager and the project’s design team (typically 2 – 5 designers) to ensure that the design meets technical and project requirements, as well as business and industry needs. You will maintain an overall view of the design on projects from initial concept, through detail design and on to installation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following - other duties may be assigned:

  • Leadership of a small team of design engineers. You will support, inspire, challenge and develop them to ensure that design projects are completed on time, to budget, to the client’s satisfaction and in accordance with SNC-Lavalin’s procedures and safety management system.
  • Work as a Design Manager on design projects, taking a lead in bidding and delivering projects, liaising directly with the end client and taking accountability for design delivery.
  • Report to and work with the design Service Leader’s to ensure that the resources within the team are allocated appropriately to the workload.
  • Work closely with Project Managers to deliver the design projects.
  • Through the lifecycle of a design project, you will liaise with our specialist engineering teams to ensure that design work is delivered in accordance with engineering best practice and in compliance with mandated standards.
  • Have an active contribution to the continuous improvement of the team’s design guides and practices, looking to raise issues where identified and adopting appropriate developments in technology and practices.
  • Support the continuous mentoring of developing engineers from our technician and graduate schemes to enhance their competency and the range of skills that SNC-Lavalin offers to its clients whilst ensuring that the Section is well motivated.
  • Provide input to the bidding process to ensure that all engineering requirements are captured at this early stage.
  • Develop relationships with clients to ensure that SNC-Lavalin continues to deliver the quality of service befitting our reputation.
  • Working with industry suppliers to define the requirements for Component/Module installation and packaging in line with recommended requirements and Standards.
  • Work closely with team leaders, section heads and others, acting as a focus for SNC-Lavalin’s range of skills in engineering design activities. Create, manage and maintain effective cross-functional, interdepartmental relationships to ensure the organisation delivers the most cost-effective service to customers.
  • Drawing on your experience in engineering design, act as a source of expertise in the development and delivery of complex engineering design solutions, taking in all stakeholder requirements.
  • Provide impartial input to design projects as an independent checker/endorser and reviewer, helping to ensure a consistent and high level of quality across all the work that we deliver.
  • Will be required to visit railway facilities on occasion and must comply with local procedures and safety arrangements.

Essential Experience and Skills:

  • Design Engineer / Manager with a degree or apprenticeship in a relevant discipline, or several years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • The successful candidate will ideally have at least 10 years’ experience within the rail industry or similar engineering industry, delivering design projects either in consultancy, new build, maintenance, or operating capacity.

Desirable Experience and Skills:

  • Knowledge of the risks associated with each aspect if the lifecycle of a design; from initial concept through to manufacturing and installation would be beneficial; covering bidding, concept, detailed design, rolling stock approvals, material procurement and installation, maintenance and warranty is a key advantage.
