We are working on many high-profile projects and frameworks nationwide, including the A465 Sections 5 and 6 upgrade, Smart Motorways and Roads Investment Programmes through the Collaborative Delivery Framework for Highways England, High Speed 2, East West Rail and alongside a number of local authorities in Wales and the West of England.
Our Transportation Business is currently seeking a Principal Engineer for our Bridges, Civils and Geomatics team in Cardiff. The successful candidate will support the delivery of a wide variety of multi-disciplinary projects in Wales and the wider UK, including major highways improvement schemes and local authority schemes.
Responsibilities:
- Use analytical skills to derive potential solutions to engineering problems and engineering judgement to recommend the most suitable option.
- Using your people, technical and delivery skills, you will be responsible for delivering a variety of structural and bridge design packages for new highways schemes, maintenance and assessment works.
- Delivery of both individual design packages and entire projects, across a range of multi-disciplinary projects within the highway and local authority environments.
- Management of resources and project finances, to ensure our schemes are delivered profitably, to programme, and in accordance with Atkins’ quality assurance systems.
- Working in large, geographically dispersed multidisciplinary design teams, to deliver projects at varying stages of development from feasibility through to detailed design.
- Stay abreast of industry developments and changes in standards. Ensure that all design submissions are compliant with all relevant standards.
- Developing the wider team by technical training and mentoring.
Requirements:
Technical
- BEng / MEng or MSc degree in civil engineering or equivalent.
- Chartered Membership of a relevant professional body (ICE and/or IStructE).
- Experienced in advanced Finite Element analysis techniques (material and geometric nonlinear analysis, nonlinear buckling, soil-structure interaction).
- Knowledgeable of BIM software (Revit) and experienced with parametric design tools (ideally proficient with programming such as VBA and/or Python).
- Knowledge of Welsh Government/SWTRA frameworks project controls, and the various deliverables required at each stage.
- Ability to lead the technical delivery of bridge and civils design projects, and relevant aspects of complex, multi-disciplinary projects.
- Experience in the analysis, strengthening and refurbishing of challenging existing bridges.
- Intimate knowledge and understanding of relevant design standards (e.g. DMRB, TSRGD, MCHW, Eurocodes and those of Highways England, Welsh Government and Manual for Streets).
- Relevant highways industry experience of working within a design consultancy essential. Wider knowledge gained from working within a contractor and/or client organisation desirable.
- Excellent spoken and written English.

- Experience of working with our key clients, such as Welsh Government, Local Authorities and major Contractors, and have an understanding or their internal organisation and processes.
- Identify and respond to our clients’ values in a competitive market sector.
- Ability to manage stakeholders, e.g. specialist suppliers, independent checkers and local authorities.
Management
- Strong project management skills, commercial awareness, financial control and ability to deliver across a range of contract types. This will include an ability to manage stakeholders, e.g. specialist suppliers, independent checkers and local authorities.
- Ability to develop and agree scopes and manage the internal technical supply chain, including budgets, programme and quality of deliverable, delivering within set time frame.
- Awareness of the business models adopted in the sector, and commercial and technical risks.
- Ability to lead bids and tenders.
People
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to converse with a wide range of Clients and colleagues across a number of engineering disciplines.
- Experience of line/team management, and motivating teams to prioritise and deliver tasks to time and budget.
- Flexibility for occasional periods working away from normal office location.
Requirements – Desirable:
- Experience as designer on design and build (D&B) and/or Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) commissions.
- Experience of collaborative software (ProjectWise, SharePoint, Business Collaborator, ProNet or Arenium).
