Principal Engineer

Job Description

Following our recent success in securing Highways England’s East Region Design Service Commission, we are looking for dynamic, charismatic individuals at all levels to join our team in the East.

You will need excellent technical competence, in highway engineering design preferably including renewals and improvements. Your role will be leading the technical quality of large schemes or a significant portfolio of highway renewal and improvement works, embracing collaborative working and helping to drive efficiencies for Clients.

You will be responsible to the East Region General Manager or Practice Manager for ensuring that your portfolio of work is delivered in accordance with the highest technical standards and Client imperatives

There are currently two roles, one based in Highways England Offices, Bedford and the other in Atkins office, Chelmsford.

Requirements

  • Chartered Engineer
  • BEng, BSc, MEng or MSc in Civil Engineering (or similar)
  • Proven competency, experience and success in;
  • All aspects of leading teams in delivering highway engineering solutions in accordance with the appropriate standards that are; ready for construction, embrace innovation and achieve project objectives within programme and budget constraints.
  • All aspects of highway design including geometric design of links, all types of junctions and highway drainage.
  • Co-ordinating multi-disciplinary teams including specialists
  • Providing advice to clients and stakeholders through a thorough understanding and experience in using the technical standards relating to highways and drainage design.
  • Identifying and seeking approvals for appropriate departures from standards in the provision of effective design solutions
  • Successfully delivering technically robust projects of varying values.
  • Coaching and developing team members.
  • Liaising with operational teams, taking schemes through handover and into maintenance
  • Complying with the designers responsibilities under the CDM regulations (Performing Principal Designer role would be an advantage)

    Responsibilities

  • Leading technical delivery of highway engineering projects and key technical input into multidisciplinary projects.
  • Running the commercial aspects of projects, ensuring project margins are maintained, change control is effectively managed and re-work minimised to ensure commercial targets are met. Preparing and overseeing the preparation of design resource estimates
  • Acting as Technical Lead or Technical Reviewer on projects.
  • Engaging with clients, contractors and stakeholders at project and portfolio level, building excellent relationships to ensure the effective provision of services, understanding and complying with contract terms, meeting and exceeding expectations.
  • Leading, mentoring and supporting a team of engineers, technicians and apprentices and taking responsibility for the performance and development of staff including annual performance reviews.  Motivating individuals and teams to be effective, efficient, economic and creative.
  • Helping to manage welfare and safety, applying appropriate safe systems of work and managing/undertaking specific risk assessments.
  • Identifying new opportunities, agreeing project scope, preparing technical submissions and quotations to win new work.
