Principle Project Manager – Highways

Our Transportation Division is currently seeking a Principle Project Manager in our Gloucester office to support the delivery of a wide variety of multi-disciplinary highways projects within Gloucestershire and surrounding counties. Using your excellent people, technical and delivery skills, you’ll drive a variety of civil and structural designs for major maintenance, new build, and assessment works.

You will be part of one of the largest transportation consultancies in the UK, and a leading supplier of engineering services to government, regulatory and local authorities, infrastructure owners and operators. Major clients include Highways England, Various Local Authorities, Network Rail, London Underground, HS2, Train Operating Companies, Design & Build Contractors and other niche clients.

Initially you will be working on highway projects being delivered under the Local Authority Framework Contract that we have with Gloucestershire County Council. We are looking to grow our civil engineering / highways design and supervision capability in the region based in Gloucester, you will also have the opportunity to work with our internationally based design teams.

Ideally you will have a background in civil engineering design and experience of the delivery of a range of multi-disciplinary projects within highway environments. You’ll be familiar with working in large, geographically dispersed multidisciplinary design teams on projects at varying stages of development from feasibility to detailed design.

Responsibilities

  • Providing leadership on a significant program of major multi-disciplinary infrastructure bids & projects or a single large project.
  • Maintain and further develop the existing teams to continue delivering world class engineering projects on time and to budget.
  • Working collaboratively with and supporting multi-disciplinary global teams. Briefing and directing project teams to ensure the work is carried out cost effectively and to specification.
  • Client engagement at regional and national levels. Understanding and meeting the client’s business needs and for them to feel confident in our commitment to deliver.
  • To work as part of a collaborative team with the Contractor / Client / Public, developing strong and lasting relationships which promote aligned, efficient and smarter ways of working.
  • Presenting to clients and key stakeholders in a professional, responsive and client focused manner.
  • Line management duties including mentoring and developing personnel.
  • Contributing to bid leadership and developing winning proposals for our largest opportunities.
  • Ensuring our culture of safety and commitment to the environment is maintained and promoted throughout our delivery teams.

Requirements

  • BEng / MEng or MSc degree in civil engineering or equivalent.
  • CEng with the Institution of Civil Engineers (preferably).
  • Program Management experience at a senior level with a successful track record of managing multiple project teams within major multi-million  pound projects and programs.
  • You will be experienced in program planning, able to set standards, provide guidance, and audit delivery of the standards.
  • Able to assist with the resolution of engineering problems.
  • Knowledge and experience to handle contractual issues competently.
  • Experience of Project Governance and Development Processes for Local Authorities and / or Highways England.
  • Awareness and specialist knowledge to ensure safety in highway environments and experience of CDM Regulations.
  • Well-developed leadership, communication, negotiating, influencing and inter-personal skills, with the drive and commitment to achieve program wide objectives. Able to ensure tasks are carried out within agreed timescales and budgets.
  • Good understanding of relevant design standards, including Eurocodes and those of Highways England and Manual for Streets. Similarly, for preparing works packages, including bills of quantities, specifications and construction drawings.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with our key clients, e.g. Local Authorities, Highways England, Network Rail, Developers and/or major Contractors.
  • Hold a valid UK driving license.
  • Experience of supervising highway works contracts

The Individual

  • You should have strong leadership and managerial qualities, with proven team management and communication skills, and the ability to motivate, mentor and develop people.
