Principal Substation Engineer

Responsibilities:

• Prepare conceptual design of the complex projects.
• Review, analyze and execute complex technical studies and project scopes.
• Develop and review technical specifications, drawings and standards of equipment and projects.
• Lead multiple teams of engineers and manage their workload and assignments.
• Plan and manage mentoring and training of engineers in their group.
• Review the design basis memorandum, detailed engineering scope and guide the assigned discipline engineers to align the engineering deliverables according to project requirements.
• Guide and advise engineers in the delivery of accurate and thorough electrical design that will meet industry standards and specifications, and meet good engineering practices.
• Guide and advise engineers in maintaining complete project documentation with respect to engineering studies and calculations, all design packages, as-built requirements and return data information.
• Maintain good working relationships with internal groups that support the project.

Requirements:

• A degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution.
• A minimum of 18 years of relevant industry experience.
• P.E. Registration required.
• Knowledge of the modern power system, power system protection and transmission & distribution system.
• Strong knowledge of the transmission and distribution system, substation layouts and bus configurations.
• Strong knowledge of grounding and lightening shielding system, rigid and strain bus calculations.
• Experienced in sizing of major equipment and selection of substation material.
• Experience in developing and reviewing protection and control schematics for distance, differential, and feeder over current and other common protections and major substation equipment.
• Experience in relay setting calculations and coordination is an asset.
• Experience on SVC, Series Compensation and/or HVDC converter stations is an asset.
• Experience with ASPEN and ETAP is an asset
• Strong client focus.
• A high level of interpersonal communication skills.
• Knowledge of North American codes and standards such as IEEE and ANSI including knowledge of NERC and FERC regulations.
