Principal Urban Drainage Modeller - Warrington/Leeds

Atkins is one of the leading names in the field of Urban Drainage and shaping the dialogue within the UK and internationally in how urban drainage can be effectively managed in the future. By joining our urban drainage national team you will be joining a multi-disciplinary team with a national remit to work with a variety of clients including water companies working on major projects and be part of a team that develops cutting edge digital services to its clients.

The individual

We seek to appoint a Principal Urban Drainage Modelling Specialist to our Networks and Drainage Engineering business to support an increasing portfolio and workload. The successful candidate should be degree qualified, have appropriate professional qualifications, and have a broad range of experience in: 

  • Model Build and Verification – creating robust sewer network models that are suitable for analysis and solution development 
  • Model Maintenance –updating models and improving them with a focus on specific study drivers 
  • Hydraulic and Water Quality Analysis – intelligent assessment of catchment hydraulics and pollutant sources to identify needs and risks 
  • Integrated Catchment Modelling – constructing models for assessing the interaction between sewers (storm and foul), watercourses and overland flows 
  • Catchment Planning– determination of hydraulic, environmental and operational needs of catchments and the development of various horizon strategies to improve catchment performance 
  • Solution Development– development of outline designs, and support through detailed design process 
  • Technical Leadership – providing direction and advice to our clients to help them make better asset investment decisions

The successful candidate shall demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the Wastewater market sector, excellent technical skills and have a proven track record of business development, client management, project management and line management.

Essential Criteria

  • Attained a chartered status (ICE or CIWEM)
  • Experience in urban drainage modelling
  • Competence in the use of Hydraulic modelling software
  • Proven track record in coordinating and delivering technically excellent projects on time and to budget
  • First class written and oral communication skills
  • A natural curiosity for developing innovative, sustainable and cost-effective solutions for our clients

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience working on Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS)
  • Experience of team working on multi-disciplinary projects
  • Sound commercial understanding
  • Able to develop and motivate others
  • Proven record of developing client relationships

Responsibilities

The role will have local responsibilities relating to technical and business performance, business resilience and technical reputation and will contribute to the implementation of business strategy.

  • Assume Technical Lead role on projects to ensure technical goverance compliance.
  • Undertake Project Manage role on projects where required
  • Actively encourage staff to participate in, and contribute to, internal best practice forums, and external profile-raising activities
  • Working collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, technicians and other professionals.
  • Promote staff development through training, on-the-job experience, and personal development.
  • Ensuring compliance with business management standards set in the company’s quality, safety and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Client Relationship Development with our key Water Company and non-Water Company clients with aim to develop strategic growth.
  • Management / technical support of bidding opportunities to win work and identify and mitigate risks

  • Ability to prioritise tasks and maintain a focus on agreed targets.
  • Good team working skills and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
  • A supportive approach to mentoring less experienced members of the team.
  • Ability to adapt to different cultures and working environments to build rapport with clients and the whole project team.
  • Good leadership qualities.
  • Customer focused with excellent relationship management skills.
  • Experience in working for both private and public sector clients and knowledge of the different drivers and approaches to management and procurement.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance.  If this is necessary, it will be discussed with you at interview.
