SNC-Lavalin is currently seeking a Project Architect to join the Architecture Department of our Infrastructure/Buildings Group in Mount Pearl, NL.

Our projects are local, nationwide, and international in range and scope. We have a full complement of architecture and engineering staff in-house, and are committed to fully collaborative and integrated design, with all team members contributing to project success.

As the ideal candidate, you hold a bachelor’s degree (minimum) and have 5 years working experience as a licensed Architect. We are looking for someone who can apply strong organizational and task management skills, and ultimately work independently to prioritize, manage multiple projects and meet deadlines. Work experience in Interior Design and Sustainable Design (LEED®, Green Globes, Passive House Canada, etc.) would be considered an asset.

As Project Architect, you will be creating designs for new construction projects, alteration and redevelopments. Working with clients, you will prepare and present design proposals, manage client relationships, and make regular site visits to advise clients on the progress of construction and deal with issues may they arise. The Architect will produce design and detailed drawings, oversee production work of design staff, aid in negotiations with contractors, coordinate work activities and attend regular meetings with clients, contractors and other specialists.

As the successful candidate, you will use your specialized construction knowledge and high-level design skills to design buildings that are functional, safe, accessible, sustainable and aesthetically pleasing. You are a licensed Architect with exceptional design capabilities and have a strong visual awareness and an eye for detail. You have strong communication skills and the ability to take initiative. The Architect is inventive, imaginative and passionate about buildings and the built environment; you care about people and being environmentally sustainable.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review client requirements and record documents; evaluate and analyze the information to understand broad requirements of a project.
  • Review design requirements, drawings and schedules to ensure program and client requirements are met and all codes and jurisdictional requirements are complied with.
  • Develop technical designs to ensure an exemplary solution is delivered that meets quality parameters, project timelines and budgetary requirements.
  • Perform technical reviews and edit drawings as required.
  • Perform design activities such as studies, programming, code research, material and building systems research, laying out program components and calculation of program and building areas; refine design options and develop building details.
  • Prepare 2D and 3D presentation and production drawings.
  • Evaluate site conditions, including zoning requirements and site constraints; meet with authorities having jurisdiction to establish requirements.
  • Design components of the overall building including integrating engineering design and adhering to applicable codes and jurisdictional requirements.
  • Perform site surveys and field reviews to accurately document existing and new construction conditions, determine compliance with construction contract and relevant building and safety codes; prepare reports to document the progress; identify any deviation from the construction contract and liaise with owner and contractor to resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Track and review project products, services and shop drawings to ensure adherence to project documents, relevant jurisdictional codes and corporate quality controls.
  • Process permit response letters and coordinate revisions with engineers and consultants, as required, to obtain necessary documentation and permits.
  • Attend meetings to coordinate drawings and resources, determine project criteria and provide information through all phases of projects.
  • Prepare project change documentation as required.
  • Coordinate with contractor, sub-consultants or relevant building authorities to address and document issues with constructability or owner concerns.
  • Comply with accepted project management methodology; document and manage scope, work effort, budget, cost controls, schedules, etc.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, engineers, designers, and other project team members to carry out project requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor Arch or Masters Arch; accredited by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB).
  • Current membership with NLAA is considered an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years well rounded experience in any of the following project types: infrastructure, industrial, commercial, federal, medical, and institutional design.
  • Proficient in Architectural software skills (i.e. AutoCAD, Revit, BIM, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.)
  • Experience in architectural design and presentation.
  • Experience in all phases and technical aspects of facility design, from programming through post construction activities.
  • Prior experience in project delivery, project management, and client management is required.
  • Familiar with Mechanical, Electrical, Structural building systems.
  • Possess superior decision making, time management, and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with integrated architectural and engineering design teams in project design and documentation, as well as standalone architecture.
  • Ability and willingness to travel. Occasional field work to perform building survey assessments on regional and possibly national projects.
  • LEED® accreditation would be an asset.
