SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins business is one of the world’s most respected design, engineering and project management consultancies with over 50,000 employees worldwide. At Atkins, we offer more than just a job. We offer an opportunity to make a difference and shape the world to benefit future generations and the environment. We have a strong Equality, Diversity and Inclusion ethos.

Based in London, Bristol, Birmingham, York and Glasgow, our Heritage team includes archaeologists, historic built environment and landscape specialists and heritage managers who provide expert advice and planning services on projects throughout the world.  We work on behalf of a wide range of clients, ranging from national governments, statutory agencies and local authorities, to charitable trusts, private developers and individuals, often drawing on our design, engineering, sustainability, ecology and other colleagues to provide a comprehensive range of services.  We have led the heritage work for projects of all sizes, and have worked on some of the highest profile projects, such as the London 2012 Olympics, HS2, and Thames Tideway, as well as major development schemes and complex flood defence projects, as well as smaller schemes of all types. We have a growing reputation for innovation and imaginative engagement, particularly on large infrastructure programmes.

We are looking for an Archaeological Consultant to join our team in Birmingham or London, to help deliver our projects throughout the Midlands and beyond. The role is ideal for someone who has strong technical archaeological capabilities including the management of archaeological fieldwork and the provision of expert advice to clients on archaeology in the planning process.  The right candidate will be innovative and imaginative in their approach - we are looking for an individual to help drive our team’s growth with an innovative approach and the technical expertise we are known for.

From the outset, this role will require the successful candidate to hit the ground running, providing support to one of our archaeological managers in the delivery of archaeological mitigation works on a major infrastructure scheme, as an Archaeological Clerk of Works.  Based in the client’s office in Milton Keynes four days a week for approximately their first six months, this role will involve collaborating with the client, key stakeholders and other discipline specialists, managing and monitoring archaeological subcontractors to ensure the successful delivery of archaeological investigations on the East West Rail project.

Applicants with a background in archaeology and the historic environment that have a good understanding of their place within the UK planning system would be welcomed. If you enjoy working on a diverse range of projects and being part of a multi-disciplinary team, then we would be interested to hear from you.

The role would be ideal for an archaeologist at project officer level in commercial archaeology seeking to develop their career towards archaeological and heritage consultancy.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Managing delivery of archaeological fieldwork to ensure that deliverables meet our requirements of quality, time and cost;
  • Preparation of and contribution to environmental statements, heritage statements, desk-based assessments, written schemes of investigation and consent applications;
