Senior Architectural Historian

Atkins is seeking a Senior Architectural Historian to join our growing Cultural Resources group in Atlanta, GA.  The selected candidate for this position will apply their historic preservation knowledge and experience toward the assessment of project sites.  This position will support projects and manage tasks in the field and in the office, including: performing and leading historic resource surveys; assessing effects to historic resources; preparing and reviewing reports in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and other relevant environmental laws; and interacting with clients, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies. Projects primarily relate to transportation and infrastructure development for clients in the public sector.

How will you contribute to the team?

  • Lead and conduct historic resource field surveys.
  • Conduct background research on historic resources using a variety of primary and secondary sources.
  • Evaluate historic resources for eligibility in the National Register of Historic Places, in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, the Georgia Environmental Policy Act (GEPA), and/or other relevant federal and state laws.
  • Assess effects to historic resources, including working with design professionals and overall project team to avoid and minimize impacts in accordance with Section 106 and/or GEPA, and propose mitigation where necessary.
  • Prepare technical reports and provide quality reviews of reports prepared by others, including creating project and resource maps.
  • Plan field work and serve as safety lead while in the field, including the preparation of safety documents and adherence to company safety protocols and procedures.
  • Candidates must be willing and prepared to spend time in the field and travel to project sites, with some overnight visits required. 
  • Projects will generally be in Georgia but may also be located outside of the state, as needed.

What will you contribute?

  • At minimum, must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for History or Architectural History, including a graduate degree in History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or a closely related field. 
  • Ideal candidate has five to seven years of full-time professional Cultural Resource Management experience conducting historical research and non-archaeological historic resource surveys plus demonstrated ability to carry projects to completion.
  • Basic level of experience with ArcGIS is required; intermediate to advanced experience is a plus.
  • General understanding of the following industries: infrastructure, transportation, state and local governments, and/or regulatory/compliance.
  • Candidate must have demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple complex projects while meeting all baseline schedule dates.
  • Excellent written, technical, and interpersonal skills. Attention to detail is a must.
  • Position may require use of company vehicle. Incumbent must have valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets company policy.
