Our Water Management Consultancy operates at the interface between people and the water environment. Our key services cover all aspects of water management including: flood and coastal erosion risk management, integrated catchment management, regulation and assurance, strategic asset management, water resources and water quality planning, hydrogeology and hydrology, aquatic ecology, hydromorphology and river restoration, climate futures and resilience, coastal and marine environmental management, natural capital assessment and economic appraisal.

We have a vacancy for an enthusiastic and ambitious individual to lead and grow our natural capital team, as we as contributing to a wide range of projects across our Water Management Consultancy and other areas of the business. Our current vacancy is for a senior position in Epsom, Bristol, Oxford, Peterborough and Warrington, although consideration will be given to exceptional candidates in other locations. We have a growing portfolio of natural capital and environmental economics related projects, supporting our clients in making the right strategic investment decisions for critical infrastructure in areas as diverse as water resources, flood management, green infrastructure and transportation. We work for clients across the UK and overseas, including central government, regulators, the water industry, NGOs and local authorities.

To support this growing workload, we are seeking technical experts with a developing technical profile in environmental economics and natural capital capable of leading on the delivery of natural capital related projects. You will have the chance to develop opportunities and support international projects through our increasing portfolio of overseas work, and with our staff in Canada, USA, India, Africa and Asia Pacific.

You should have good project management skills, commercial awareness, and the confidence to lead technical work as well as mentor junior team members in developing their skills. You must be client focused and able to build strong relationships with our clients with a high degree of collaborative working skills to ensure we get the best from our working relationships with client teams.

As a major engineering, environmental and design consultancies Atkins offers opportunities for talented consultants to work on a wide variety of high profile projects.  We have, for example, ongoing projects related to natural capital for the water industry, local authorities and regulators. 

Requirements:

·         Must have a degree in a relevant discipline and preferably relevant post-graduate qualification.

·         Demonstrable experience in environmental and economic appraisal.

·         Experience in project management and technical leadership of projects

·         Excellent writing skills - clarity in scientific writing is key. Able to adapt writing style to produce documents for different types of audience, including non-specialists.

·         Be available to travel across the UK and occasionally overseas.

·         Preferably chartered through an appropriate institution

 

Responsibilities

Your day to day activities will involve: developing and agreeing the scope of services, managing and supervising junior resources, and actively progressing a suite of projects under your control. You will have an excellent grasp of project procedures including financial and change control, report writing, ability to present, and quality assurance through checking and reviewing. In addition, you will be required to lead bidding and work-winning activities. 

You will be required to produce high quality client facing reports, and to undertake and lead data analysis to support projects. On an on-going basis, you’ll be supporting project managers and directors in delivering a range of projects, including strategic infrastructure projects where we may also provide an internally facing consultancy service.

Training

Atkins develops individuals through a portfolio of training and development activities designed to help you make the best of your abilities and talents. These are reviewed with individuals through an annual development process. We support staff in achieving and maintaining membership of relevant institutions. You will also be part of our global Technical Networks, which provide a flow of technically orientated information and ideas through the company. For this role, our Economics network will support your learning, but there are many others you could also join.

Atkins will support you in your professional development, whether with the ICE, CIWEM or others.  This includes paying your annual membership and providing access to training.
