Senior Electrical Engineer

SNC-Lavalin’s Transportation business is seeking an experienced engineer who thrives on team work and personal challenge to deliver a world class specialist electrical consultancy service for our clients.

The successful applicant will have a broad range of engineering skills and experience that includes technical competency in areas such as rolling stock electrical engineering, decarbonisation (including rolling stock hybridisation projects), on-board systems integration, traction systems, on-board communications systems and EMC.  To support this role the candidate skills shall include professional technical report writing, tendering and commercial expertise, project management and delivery.

About the Team

The Engineering Services group within the Rail Consultancy Practice comprises specialist design and engineering resources that provide engineering expertise and guidance on a wide range of UK and international rolling stock projects.  This is one of the largest and most well-established rolling stock engineering teams in the UK.

Our experienced electrical engineering team, operating from our office in Derby provide key electrical engineering support to internal and external clients.  Knowledge and specialisms held within the team, grounded by a wealth of rail industry experience allow us to support a wide range of UK and international projects:

  • New build and refurbishment design;
  • Train control system enhancement;
  • Technical investigations;
  • Design scrutiny;
  • Traction system development;
  • Risk assessment and validation;
  • EMC engineering.

What you’ll be doing

As a senior engineer, your work will be spread across three key activities:

  • Delivering Work: Using your experience and knowledge, to lead the delivery of a variety of projects drawing upon the wider team for the technical engineering requirements.
  • To present technical and commercial information authoritatively to internal and external audiences, and facilitate workshops and meetings as required.  You will be client-facing, responsible for the delivery of our work and making sure it meets our client’s expectations.
  • Mentoring and Development: To develop new tools/techniques to meet the needs of clients and teaching new skills to others as appropriate. To supervise and mentor less experienced colleagues and ensure that project activities are undertaken in line with company procedures and authority levels.
  • Business Growth and Development: To take an active role in business development activities, drafting proposals in response to ITTs and supporting the bid process, demonstrating market knowledge and applying commercial judgements appropriately.

Qualifications:

  • Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualifications and experience.
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership with the IET.
  • Essential Criteria:
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in the rail sector.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to perform and review electrical engineering calculations / studies.
  • Provide engineering support and solve queries during design, testing, installation and commissioning, attend site meetings and perform vehicle surveys.
  • Willingness to work as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to travel to client sites when required.
  • A good understanding of rail standards and legislation.
  • Capability to work under tight deadlines while achieving objectives with the ability to deal with competing priorities and manage time appropriately.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of computer-based packages e.g. MicroCap / Matlab / PSpice.
  • Safety engineering experience including the preparation of safety cases and CSM approvals.
  • Atkins recognise that there are many well qualified people who are looking to further their career, but who cannot commit to full time employment.
