Join as a Senior Highways Engineer in our Transportation team. We work on projects of all sizes, scopes and scales, from the large M25 Project to the niche Human Drive. Our projects are bringing digitalisation to highways and transforming the way people live and work. And you'll be part of these collaborative design teams based across the country and the world. It's an exciting era for UK highways, with the rise of intelligent networks, autonomous technology and mobility as a service. To lead in emerging areas that interest you, all you need to do is speak up and take the initiative.

Your purpose

  • You will be a competent designer with proven ability who leads and takes ownership for design and project delivery, working to the highest technical standards and quality targets.
  • You'll have opportunities for designing and managing significant highway and active travel infrastructure, from managing complete vital local improvement projects to leading teams or disciplines on strategic infrastructure projects.
  • You will be responsible for providing robust technical design solutions that meet client ambitions and exceed their expectations, typically co-ordinating as discipline, package or design lead.
  • You’ll lead highway design delivery in accordance with the Atkins Business Management System and complying with quality, safety and environmental standards; overseeing the production of design documentation for highway schemes, including sketches, drawings, calculations, reports and specifications to programme and budget.
  • You’ll contribute to work winning, developing scopes, pricing and programmes and sometimes entire bid packages.
  • You’ll derive design solutions by drawing upon expertise across the team, using your excellent analytical skills to solve engineering problems and applying your engineering judgement to appraise and recommend options and to check and review deliverables.
  • You’ll stay abreast of industry developments and changes in standards; maintaining and developing excellent professional relationships with clients, preparing fee offers and presenting to internal and external stakeholders.
  • You’ll work collaboratively across the Atkins business and with our partner organisations and contribute to pastoral care and development of more junior staff by technical training and mentoring.

    What you can bring

  • BEng / MEng or MSc degree in civil engineering or equivalent.
  • Incorporated or Chartered status and membership of the ICE or CIHT, or able to demonstrate a pathway to chartership in the near future as part of your plan for this role.
  • Experience of working with our key clients, e.g. Local Authorities, Highways England, Developers and/or Contractors.
  • Able to demonstrate responsibility for leading highways design teams and / or packages.
  • Able to demonstrate in-depth understanding of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges and BIM, and their use in design.
