Our growing team is looking for a talented Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with nuclear decommissioning experience, or experience in a safety critical industry. You’ll enjoy working on technically challenging engineering projects and be able to solve complex problems, clearly communicating solutions to others. You’ll enjoy working with others, sometimes directly at client sites, sometimes from our offices.
This role offers excellent opportunities for career development for the right candidate. If you have a passion for engineering and want to understand where a career with Atkins might lead, then we would like to hear from you.
The Team:
As part of SNC-Lavalin’s Nuclear & Power business, the Reactor Decommissioning team is made up of engineers and scientists who work across numerous mechanical engineering, nuclear safety and waste management projects. Within the nuclear decommissioning industry, our engineers provide advice and support that is critical to continued safe operation of existing plant and decommissioning of plant that has reached its end of life. SNC-Lavalin are also poised play a key role in the development of decommissioning and waste management solutions for the UK and Europe’s fleet of nuclear reactors that have reached or are coming to the end of their power generating life. You’ll help to grow our technical capability to address a diverse range of problems in a safety critical environment.
Whilst your office base will be in Bristol, flexibility in work location is important – from time to time our clients do call on our team to deliver work from their sites.
The Role:
We work across numerous plant areas, each with different technical challenges, but with a focus on nuclear decommissioning and waste management. These include design and assessment of Intermediate Level Waste and Low Level Waste retrieval and processing techniques, packaging of waste for transportation and long-term storage, assessment of existing plant, support to the planning and infrastructure required for decommissioning and the management of installation and commissioning of plant and equipment on site. You’ll be expected to help define the problem, identify an appropriate methodology, and justify the right solution.
You’ll be helping us to develop clients decommissioning plans, design and construction of new plant to aid nuclear decommissioning projects and deliver innovative consultancy advice to key clients. Decommissioning projects are multidisciplinary in nature, and while the role requires a core experience of delivering mechanical handling design solutions, a strong understanding and demonstration of the consideration of multidiscipline factors, including ALARP principles, within design is highly desirable.
Our reputation is centred on delivering the right engineering solutions to our clients’ problems. We value the relationship we have with our client and would expect you to improve the engineering service we provide, and build close relationships with the client, founded on trust and delivery.
The Person:
We are looking for people who relish technically challenging engineering projects. You should have the ability to solve complex problems and be able to clearly communicate this solution to others. A strong mechanical engineering background is essential, as well as an aptitude to develop into new technical areas quickly.
You will be proactive and have excellent communication and presentation skills. You will also have an appreciation of the commercial aspects of consultancy and design projects, to identify project risks and to ensure mitigations are identified and in place. And you get satisfaction from building relationships, with clients and with colleagues.
Staff development and career progression is crucial to our business and we are therefore seeking highly motivated engineers that can help others to develop and achieve their potential. You will therefore have skills in (or an interest in undertaking) the leadership and development / mentoring of staff and help to develop others by sharing your knowledge and experience.
Nuclear decommissioning industry experience is highly desirable.
In addition to this, or experience in a safety critical industry, you will be able to demonstrate the following:
Honours Degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering or related discipline (2:1 minimum).
Chartered Engineer or working towards chartership with the IMechE (or another engineering institution).

Proven record of delivering technically challenging projects.
Able to produce and review/correct high quality technical reports.
Motivated and driven to meet delivery/cost targets without compromising quality.
Awareness of own technical limitations and using the help and support of others to deliver.
An understanding of the commercial aspects of a consultancy business.
Some on-site or hands-on plant experience is desirable but not essential.
The ability to speak French, German, Japanese or Chinese would be an added bonus.
