THE ROLE

We are looking to recruit a Senior / Principal Lighting Engineer into our Lighting practice to work on multi-disciplinary engineering projects across a wide range of sectors and applications.   The projects will mainly be in the exterior environment in a varied range of lighting applications across the highways, transportation and infrastructure sectors. There will also be the opportunity to work on interior and architectural projects.

The design role will include all stages from developing the initial concept through to detailed design and will cover all aspects of lighting.

The successful candidate will be enjoying a successful career in lighting and have a detailed knowledge of lighting and how different engineering and non-engineering disciplines work together to create the whole system in some of the most high-profile projects currently being undertaken.  In addition to office-based design there will be a requirement to undertake site surveys and liaise with other disciplines, clients and stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

Technical

  • Responsible for the delivery of technical consultancy support primarily related to exterior lighting projects and businesses as required

Stakeholder

  • Liaising with customers in a responsive and client focused manner
  • Engaging with customers and other stakeholders to develop appropriate solutions

Management

  • Supporting the Team Leader and other teams with the development of technical solutions, reports and management of projects
  • Responsible for leading and completion of specifically assigned tasks to time and cost
  • Adhering to the company’s Quality, Safety and Environmental procedures
  • Developing tender responses and fee estimates

People

  • Assigning work to and checking the project work of other staff
  • Mentoring and supporting the development of others

THE INDIVIDUAL

You will currently be registered with the Institution of Lighting Professionals (ILP) to the level of Member as a minimum.

You will need to have technical competency in order to maintain Atkins’ reputation for technical excellence and be recognised as an expert in lighting.  You should enjoy working as part of a varied team and be able to self-manage your responsibilities. You’ll need to be motivated with a drive for continuing improvement and professional development.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Technical

  • Qualified to least HNC in electrical engineering, or similar discipline
  • Registered full Member of the Institution of Lighting Professionals
  • Engineering Council registered to CEng or IEng
  • ILP Exterior Lighting Diploma or its predecessor
  • Experience of BS 7671 (18th Edition Wiring Regulations)
  • Proven ability to apply lighting standards in such a way to deliver client requirements
  • Substantial experience of Highways England (HE) and local authority standards including the updated DMRB, TA501 Road Lighting appraisals and TD501 Road Lighting Design requirements
  • Substantial experience in stakeholder engagement at senior client and contractor levels
  • Extensive proven ability to act as discipline lead on multi-disciplinary projects
  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office software particularly MS Excel and Word
  • Proficient in discipline design software particularly AutoCAD and BIM related plugin’s, Lighting Reality and electrical cable sizing software.
  • Experience of the preparation of technical reports
  • Ability to supervise a small team undertaking checks and inspections of constructed works for compliance with design and specifications, including monitoring and proposing remedial actions

Management

  • Significant proven ability to deliver work within set timeframes
  • Extensive proven ability to project manage projects ensuring a consistent high-quality output

BENEFICIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Registered with the Highway Electrical Industry Sector Scheme for Authorised Personnel
  • Current CSCS card
  • Experience in developing and delivering presentations
  • Experience of business development
  • Experience in a range of technical areas such as:
    • Public open space decorative lighting solutions
    • Environmental impact assessments
    • BIM / 3D modelling / visualisations
    • Central Management Systems
    • Rail and light rail
    • Lighting policy and strategy development
    • Sustainability
    • Carbon management techniques
    • Optimisation techniques and tools
  • Familiarity in the development and agreement of scopes and management of the internal technical supply chain, including budgets, programme and quality of deliverable 
  • Known for drafting articles in professional journals or presenting at industry events
  • Driving Licence
