Atkins seeks an energetic and highly motivated self-starter to join our Reno, NV Team as a Sr. Highway Engineer. We have active local roadway projects with Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County. We are also listed on several on-call lists with these two agencies and deliver roadway planning and design projects for other local agencies within the region. We support a national workshare program where we share resources when the workloads call for resource sharing.

MAJOR FUNCTION/ROLE

Under supervision, applies technical professional proficiency to the investigation of Highway/Roadway engineering problems, the coordination of project activities, and the preparation of preliminary plans and documents.

On design assignments, progresses toward learning how to clearly convey the design intent through engineering drawings and specifications.

On engineering and planning assignments, continues to develop a knowledge of the fundamentals of Highway/Roadway engineering processes and to apply them successfully to operating systems.

On construction assignments, continues to develop an understanding of Highway Engineering methods and the translation of Highway engineering plans and specifications into constructed product. Upholds engineering ethics and standards of conduct.

JOB DUTIES
  • Performs Highway, Roadway and Utilities engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials or procedures, or difficult coordination requirements.
  • Performs design of roadway, storm drain, utility and other infrastructure elements of a project using AutoCAD Civil 3D and or MicroStation/OpenRoads.
  • Plans, schedules, conducts or coordinates detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope.
  • Performs preliminary engineering design and/or reviews the design and drafting work of junior engineers, designers or drafters.
  • Prepares cost and man-hour estimates, job budgets and schedules.
  • Prepares or oversees the preparation of final plans and reports and submits them for approval.
  • Conducts or oversees personnel involved in engineering investigations and planning work.
  • Coordinates work with other engineers and professionals within and outside own discipline, and with support services staff.
  • May occasionally assist in the management of projects.
  • May perform such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • B.S. or M.S. in Engineering. M.S. or graduate level technical coursework preferred. This level may be achieved by Engineers with seven years of experience since B.S. or 6 years since M.S.
  • Typical incumbent has ten to fourteen years of experience.

SPECIAL SKILLS
  • Technical writing, computer and communications skills required. May be eligible to receive project management training. Strong MicroStation/AutoCAD skills required. Previous Design/Build project experience a plus but not required. Successful candidate will ideally have 4 to 8 years of experience.

PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATIONS
  • P.E. license is required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Experience with MicroStation required.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D preferred, but not required.
