We are looking for an outstanding candidate to join the structural integrity assessment and design team within our nuclear business. The work diet will focus predominantly on design, substantiation and integrity assessment of systems operating in a wide range of temperatures and environmental conditions. In addition to predominantly nuclear focused project work there are opportunities to undertake technical work within our wider energy portfolio such as conventional power, oil and gas and renewables. In the longer term there are technical and managerial development opportunities within the wider Atkins business, and this is supported with extensive training opportunities.

About the Team:

Our team is on the cutting edge of complex and novel multi-disciplinary design and analysis projects. We have core capabilities in:

Mechanical Analysis: Specialising in complex FEA, fracture mechanics, structural integrity and code based lifting assessments.

Mechanical design: Specialising in process systems, piping and multi-disciplinary design.

Materials and Corrosion: Materials selection, corrosion protection specification, and corrosion mitigation strategies.

Automation tools and novel method development.

The group sits within the Nuclear Assets business in Atkins SNC-Lavalin, but supports a wide range of clients across the energy market including:

Current Nuclear Assets

Nuclear New Build

Nuclear Decommissioning

Offshore Wind

Oil and Gas

The constant in this role is the exciting nature of the jobs and the chance to provide innovative solutions to a range of problems for several appreciative clients.

What you’ll be doing:

As an engineer within the business you will work within small to medium sized teams within the mechanical perusal and structural integrity discipline and will have core capacity in this area. The location of these teams will vary depending on the project and be comprised of Atkins SNC-Lavalin offices, client offices or plant sites. You will have the ability to work within those teams such that you can effectively support and deliver tasks for multiple workstreams, have a level of commercial awareness and be certain in your ability to deliver to time, quality and cost.

You’ll need to have:

We are looking for individuals with the following experience:

Degree qualified in a relevant engineering / technical discipline and professionally accredited / chartered.

Demonstrable experience in high temperature creep and fatigue assessment and at least another two of the following disciplines:

Static, dynamic and thermal stress-analysis; Finite element analysis (including static, dynamic and thermal stress problems).

Design by analysis to a nuclear industry recognised code (e.g. to ASME III, RCC-MR, PD5500, ASME 31.1, ASME 31.3 or EN 13480 etc);

Material performance and degradation assessment;

Fracture mechanics and fatigue;

Failure mode and effects analysis.

A track record for self-sufficient delivery of complex structural integrity and design problems and associated quality assurance.

Good oral and written communication skills with a proven ability to write accurate, detailed and concise technical reports (e.g. design substantiations, basis of survey, safety case support references). 

Ability to define, plan, guide and deliver multiple projects or programmes of work simultaneously, display commercial awareness, have positive stakeholder management experience and be certain in your ability to deliver to time, quality and cost. 

Able to manage project scope change (including across offices).

Stakeholder management - A strong ability to engage closely and regularly with clients to both deliver and develop new workstreams/opportunities.

Comfortable with engaging with prospective clients, working at their sites, and investing time in understanding their design objectives and processes.

Experience in presenting your work at workshops or conferences, such that you can  represent/promote the group’s technical capabilities to a broad audience.
