Team Leader- Rail System Certification

We are looking for engineers that have enthusiasm for complex multidisciplinary rail projects, enjoy problem solving and finding solutions that meet the requirements of multiple stakeholders. If you are a technical specialist in any part of the railway industry and have a general understand of how the railway works as a system then you are the type of person we want to join our Rail Systems team.

Responsible for:

  • Defining and delivering a Rail System Certification Services Business Plan which supports the Business Plan objectives for both your local team and for the overall Assurance service.
  • Safety and wellbeing of staff within the team.
  • Delivery of high-quality consultancy services to clients, and support to others within the wider company, as required.
  • Identifying and supporting developments to the company’s Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental Systems that are required for safe and effective delivery of the services. 
  • Being a source of guidance and expertise, specifically in relation to rail system certification assessment / management processes, organisation’s statutory obligations, and associated services delivered by the company.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

    Management:

  • Develop and issue a Rail System Certification Services Business Plan which defines how the business objectives for the Rail System Certification team, within the overall Assurance service area, are to be delivered.
  • Manage the care and safety of staff within the Rail System Certification team.
  • Lead the bidding and delivery of projects provided by the Rail System Certification team.
  • Undertake staff appraisals and management reviews as required by the company’s processes and emerging needs (when appropriate).
  • Manage workload and optimise performance, meeting budgetary requirements defined and measured by current management metrics.
  • Ensure all team members receive the appropriate training to fulfil their obligations to the company, and to provide them with the skills necessary for the assignments that they are expected to undertake.
  • Take a leading role in the recruitment of staff and associates to meet or exceed the Business Plan.
  • Ensure that each assignment or project is undertaken by individuals or by teams with suitable competence, i.e. having appropriate levels of qualifications, professional expertise and experience.
  • Ensure that the roles and responsibilities of team members on each assignment or project are defined and understood.

    Project Delivery:

  • Respond efficiently to client enquiries and manage all aspects of assignments or projects undertaken for clients including estimating, tendering, planning and execution.
  • Ensure that work is completed on time, to budget, and to the client's satisfaction.
  • Ensure the quality of service meets defined targets and that all work meets or exceeds the expectations of clients.
  • Ensure that all work is undertaken in accordance with company procedures, including quality procedures.
  • Work closely with other team leaders, acting as a focus for the range of skills delivered by the Rail System Certification team.
  • Maintain professional expertise by participating in an approved Continuing Professional Development Scheme.

    Development:

  • Produce and deliver a Development Plan to enable the company to be well placed to meet the emerging market need for rail system certification / management services.
  • Define the organisational structure needed for delivering rail system certification / management services.
  • Train, mentor and develop individuals to enhance motivation and enable individuals to fulfill their potential, whilst supplementing team competence in areas required by the company’s clients.
  • Work closely with other teams and other parts of the company to develop and market rail system certification / management services.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Essential - Chartered Engineer with a degree in a relevant discipline, or 8 years related experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Essential - Sufficiently knowledgeable about your area to act as a Project Director, Project Manager, Assignment Allocator, Checker and Approver so that only staff competent to execute and deliver appropriate solutions are used.
  • Highly desirable - Should be confident to deliver presentations to formal industry forums
  • Advantageous - Ability to read, write and communicate in a language additional to English.

    INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

  • Excellent written, presentation and communication/briefing skills.
  • Excellent networking and client-facing skills.
  • Excellent people-management skills
  • Ability to identify personal issues of staff which adversely affect their performance and support those staff in resolution of such issues.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • SNC-Lavalin performs its business within open plan offices and operates a no smoking policy.  There is a designated smoking area allocated for use by company employees.
  • Will be required to visit railway workshops/depots on occasion and must comply with local procedures and safety arrangements.
