The transportation infrastructure sector is experiencing unprecedented levels of investment and Atkins is playing lead roles in projects to upgrade existing transport networks to deliver future demand including major new road schemes, high-speed rail as well as extensive public transport enhancements.  Our teams are currently delivering exciting and important policy, strategy, modelling and research projects throughout the transportation sector. We are at the forefront of national and international policy making, supporting key decision makers at all levels; and are also supporting the development of cutting-edge technology in the transport sector.

We have a growth plan to respond to this pipeline of work and are currently recruiting talented individuals to help deliver transport planning projects for our expanding client base.  With over 300 specialists in our Transport Planning business we have the flexibility and resources to provide our clients with an extensive range of services including transport policy and strategy planning, traffic modelling, scheme appraisal, travel demand management and development planning.

We are seeking a dynamic technical leader - passionate and knowledgeable about the future of our cities and the role of transport planning in shaping the new, smarter spaces in the UK.

The Technical Director is one of a team of four other directors reporting to the Director of the Transport Planning.  The Technical Director will be expected to work collaboratively with this senior team to drive growth, improve operational performance and ensure technical excellence across the whole of the Consultancy practice.   

Our Transportation business is structured according to Practices and Market teams.  The Technical Director will work closely with Market and Client Directors accountable for each of our key client accounts.  This includes Market Directors responsible for our relationships with Department for Transport, Highways England, Network Rail and local authorities and who develop our wider business strategy for these clients.  The Technical Director will be required to collaborate effectively with the Market teams to support business development, develop technical propositions, grow our client base and prioritise the practice’s work winning and work delivery activities to align with the strategic framework set by the market teams. 

Role Responsibilities

This is a key leadership role covering a number of areas:

  • The Technical Director is responsible for leading the business development and revenue generation in the new growth area within the practice, maintaining and improving staff motivation and engagement, and growing capability and capacity through staff development and recruitment.
  • Work winning and delivery - aligning the practice to client accounts identified in the Transportation business plan, developing the specific growth plan;
  • Technical leadership - ensuring that the Transport Planning deploys and continually develops the best technical and management solutions for our clients, and that we strive for and promote technical excellence.  This is expected to include taking roles as Project Director or Technical Reviewer on our most strategically important commissions.
  • Ensuring we have sufficient resources with the right skills to deliver our current and future market strategies. This includes those within the practice, colleagues in our GDC and through our supply chain partners.
  • Promote the practice and wider Atkins/SNCL externally.
  • Support the Transport Planning Practice Director in delivering the performance targets for the wider practice.
  • The Technical Director role is expected to blend client-facing project delivery and work-winning activities with operational management and overall practice leadership, with c40% of their time on client-facing activities.  

Requirements

  • Proven experience in a leadership role, preferably in the transport planning working across all modes of transport
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Strong collaborative behaviours to work closely with the Transport Planning Practice Director, Market Directors, and other stakeholders
  • A track record of growing a business in a consultancy environment
  • Performance driven with strong business acumen with a demonstrated knowledge of identifying potential value creation
  • Customer focused with excellent relationship management skills
