PROJECT SUMMARY:

The joint venture between SNC-Lavalin and Aecon (operating as CanAtom) has been awarded multiple contracts with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to carry out the Darlington Refurbishment scopes of work. The projects involve refurbishment of all four reactors at the Darlington Generating Station, turbine generator refurbishment, and other infrastructure improvement projects throughout the site.  The contracts also include a long-term master service agreement for miscellaneous capital and maintenance projects at Darlington and Pickering.

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Reporting to the CANATOM TGR Project Director, the TGR Controls Upgrades Project Manager is responsible for the successful execution of the controls upgrade portion of the Darlington Turbine Generator Refurbishment Project.  The Controls Upgrades Project Manager is accountable for all site execution matters ensuring the safe and timely performance of the work and ensuring quality standards are upheld.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsibility for the execution of the controls upgrades work with high total project quality, including safety, project management, schedule performance, cost, manpower and client communications.
  • Responsibility for financial, accounting, and reporting associated with the controls upgrade scope.
  • Liaise with key stakeholders, engineering, construction, quality, client & subcontractors.
  • Maintain a positive relationship with client construction and project management counterparts.
  • Identifies succession plans for key individuals and implements necessary steps to train these individuals.
  • Ensure work is performed within quality program requirements.
  • Accountable for safety and human performance issues within assigned scope, and for collaborating with the project Safety Manager.
  • Ensure a strong nuclear safety culture is reinforced continuously.
  • Identification of threats to project delivery and establishment of suitable counter measures.
  • Manage and develop resources required to execute the TGR controls upgrades scope.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Informal safety inspections as per Red Book (safety/leadership) training.
  • Provide supervisory guidance to project personnel.
  • Input and evaluation to support succession plans.
  • Ensure that all employees within the assigned scope are fully trained for the functions they are expected to fulfill.
  • Teach and mentor direct reports and other project managers to develop members of the team. 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • BSc in Engineering or equivalent
  • Minimum 15 years’ experience in managing major projects, including large scale nuclear projects
  • PMP Certification is preferred
  • Experience in managing and working in large joint venture projects is preferred
  • EPC experience is required
  • Proficiency with Windows based personal computer and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Technical knowledge of construction methods, controls upgrade installations, rigging, building systems, and terminology
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings, blue prints and specifications
  • Must be knowledgeable of INPO (Institute of Nuclear Power Operation) practices and principles and practice same
  • Must have experience working in a live Nuclear environment (operating nuclear station)
  • Must have a full appreciation of the importance of Quality Assurance Programs and their significance to the nuclear industry
  • Extensive knowledge of nuclear project work, financial operations, estimating and employee relations required.
