TOWN PLANNER

Planning a better future for our communities

Bring your skills to the table as a Senior Town Planner in our diverse and friendly UK and India Planning team based in our Bangalore office. You will work in a dynamic multi-disciplinary environment, collaborating and learning within Atkins teams and businesses across the UK and worldwide. We are big on expertise, but not on hierarchy. So, we will trust you with more responsibility faster, supporting you to progress and lead on an exciting variety of major infrastructure and development projects.

We are at the forefront of thought leadership in sustainable infrastructure and development, from Net Zero to ESG, Biodiversity Net Gain and digital transformation. You can progress your career interests across Energy, Water, Transportation and Housing markets supporting our UK Central Government clients including, Environment Agency, National Highways, Homes England, High Speed 2, Ministry of Defence, Department of Levelling Up and Network Rail and regional Government clients including, Transport for London, Transport for the North, West of England Combined Authority and the Greater London Authority and many others such as local authorities and private developers. Our colleagues also lead international development work for funding institutions and government bodies.

Your purpose

Responsibilities and requirements will depend on your experience, our team:

  • Provides advice to our growing markets in the development, transportation, energy, aviation, water and defence sectors.
  • Delivers an expanding workload for a wide range of clients in the public and private sectors.
  • Works in a dynamic multi-disciplinary environment with colleagues in environmental, engineering and design disciplines across the wider Atkins UK and international teams. 
  • Secures consents for and helps deliver transformative and high-quality infrastructure and communities.

The type of work you might be involved in includes:

  • Undertaking planning appraisals to identify planning and environmental site constraints and opportunities;
  • Preparing planning applications for infrastructure and development proposals under a variety of consent regimes including Town and Country Planning Act, Transport and Works Act Orders or Planning Act 2008 (DCOs); 
  • Drafting relevant supporting documentation; 
  • Supporting the preparation of strategy and policy documents and evidence-based studies;  
  • Providing input into, or co-ordinating, Environmental Impact Assessments or other planning related deliverables;  
  • Managing or supporting responses to tender opportunities and fee proposals;  
  • Working with senior colleagues to identify, develop and pursue new business and marketing opportunities across a range of sectors; 
  • Supporting resource and workload allocation in liaison with the project and team managers; 
  • Recruiting to grow the team. 

What you can bring

  • A relevant planning degree and either RTPI membership or evidence of working towards RTPI membership (or related/equivalent qualifications/professional membership) are desirable.
  • You must be self-motivated, enthusiastic, determined and resilient.
  • Work under pressure, with excellent time management and success in meeting tight deadlines
  • Manage and work on multiple assignments delivering outputs on time and within budget
  • Work well as part of multi-disciplinary teams with the confidence to input effectively as an individual across a range of projects, consenting and strategic planning, and a range of geographies.
  • Prepare accurate and well-presented reports and presentations to a high standard.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal communication skills and the aptitude to rationally explain, explore and discuss planning issues
  • Flexibly apply knowledge and experience to a wide variety of planning-related tasks.
  • Being different makes a difference – creative thought, qualitative reasoning, atypical problem-solving, pattern spotting, big-picture thinking, and the ability to multi-task or single-task focus.

Please note that this is not a position for an Urban Designer.
