Business area: Infrastructure
What qualification are you studying towards?: Bachelors In Civil Engineering
What made you decide to pursue an apprenticeship?
After completing my A-levels in Maths, Physics and Product Design I was unsure if I wanted to continue my academic studies full time, so I undertook several internships to get a flavour of the engineering industry. During these internships, I really wanted to understand how my academic studies could fit within the real world. Pursuing an apprenticeship with Atkins has allowed me to gain academic qualifications and valuable experience with a global consultancy, as well as a salary.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying for an apprenticeship?
At the age of 18 it is quite difficult to make a career path decision as you are questioning if you want to go straight to university, or not. Being an apprentice at Atkins requires hard work, perseverance and someone who is eager to learn. The most valuable advice I could give anyone is that before applying for any apprenticeship try gaining some engineering experience in disciplines which you find interesting. This will allow you to choose an apprenticeship best suited to you.
What have you enjoyed most in the time you’ve been here? And what’s the next milestone you’re working towards?
Since I started I’ve had exposure to a variety of work from project based assignments to essay writing. I’ve really enjoyed working on some of the big infrastructure projects such as East West Rail Phase 2, Cross Rail 2 and more recently Euston Station Enabling Works detailed drainage design. Currently I’m studying toward a degree in Civil Engineering while working towards my Incorporated Engineer status with the Institute of Civil Engineers.
