Insights Shell pearl GTL | Collaborating on success

An inspiring mega project situated in Qatar, Pearl Gas to Liquids (GTL) is the world’s largest GTL project and source of GTL products. It produces a staggering 140,000 barrels a day, and 120,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day of natural gas liquids and ethane.

Cross market, end-to-end opportunities

Between 2006 and 2012, our client mandated us to deliver a number of contracts on Pearl GTL across all three areas of our business: engineering, procurement and construction (EPC); construction; and technical support services. Our teams are proud to have successfully delivered this project from initial site works to commissioning, and to continue to operate and maintain it.

Career defining achievements

2006: Our EPC teams began the first major contract on the project for the modular waste water treatment plant on the 35,000 workers construction village. Their next work package included the diesel power generation scope and temporary telecommunications for the plant’s turnkey temporary facilities.

Our share of Phase 1 totalled in excess of US$ 320 million, with our teams developing the upstream gas production facilities, and an onshore GTL. Works also included developing a block within Qatar’s vast North Field gas reserves to produce 1.6 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas.

2009 - 2010: Our talented teams began construction on electrical and instrumentation for the utility and flare areas, materials management and commissioning support. This enabled critical process utilities commissioning to start, in preparation for plant wide systems completion.

2011: we were awarded a Framework Agreement to provide services in executing Plant Change Requests by Qatar Shell GTL Limited. Under the Framework Agreement, we provide engineering design, construction supervision and procurement services for plant changes and projects at Pearl GTL plant, as well as to its offshore platforms, harbour tank farms, offloading jetties and connecting infrastructure.

Our technical support services teams became involved in the final commissioning stages. In mid 2011, the Pearl GTL plant sold its first commercial shipment of GTL gas oil, marking the start of production.

2012: The plant reached full production capacity, safely and reliably.

Ongoing: Having been involved in this world-scale project from initial site works through to commissioning activities, we're delighted to continue working with Shell in the operational and maintenance phase of the project with brownfield engineering services over the coming years.
