Fire Safety Engineering Analyst

The department of Safety Engineering at AtkinsRealis/Candu Energy is engaged in the deterministic and probabilistic fire assessments in support of new CANDU Nuclear Power Plants as well as supporting the operation and safety of the existing domestic and international CANDU plants. The Fire Safety Analyst will work under senior staff to develop and apply advanced analysis methodologies to address client/project concerns regarding safety and licensing for plant support, refurbishment and new build. These include issues related to fire hazard assessment (FHA), fire probabilistic safety assessment (PSA), fire safe shutdown analysis (FSSA) and fire code compliance review (CCR).

Your role within the team:

The candidates are expected to enhance their technical skills through on-the-job-training, and be ready to take on various technical tasks within a short period of time, this includes but not limited to:

  • Service projects from inception through to delivery in support of fire safety standards.
  • Support the delivery of project work within time and cost budgets.
  • Keep up to date with regulations and legislation.
  • Support the development of fire strategies.
  • Carry out site visits.
  • Assess fire related risks in projects and working collaboratively to mitigate where possible.
  • Review and comment on the fire assessments.
  • Full commitment to working in a formal QA environment.

The ideal candidate:

  • Must have fully completed an Engineering degree, preferably fire engineering or alternatively a post graduate qualification in fire engineering.
  • 2-3 years’ experience in Fire Safety Engineering would be preferred
  • Knowledge of building codes NBCC and NC.
  • Knowledge of CSA N293 and CSA N393 as well as applicable NFPA and ULC standards
  • Fire modelling experience using CFAST or FDS will be beneficial.
  • Experience within nuclear sector would be advantageous.
  • Able to work towards profession fire engineer status.
  • A flexible approach to the working environment.
  • Willingness to travel will be a positive advantage.
  • Customer focused.
  • Ability to collate information and have a clear and structured approach to report writing.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team including other engineering disciplines and technologists.
  • Strong problem-solving skills are essential.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Above average initiative, drive and resourcefulness.
