Insights Day in the Life of a Bangalore Graduate Secondee

Hi, I am Felcia and I am a Graduate Building Services Engineer in Bristol. A month ago, I hopped on a plane to Bangalore, India to work in the Atkins Global Design Centre (GDC) through the Graduate Secondment Scheme.

None of my days in India have been the same. Here, I would like to share a 'typical' day of my time in GDC:
 
After breakfast in the accommodation, I walk to the office to start work at 9.15am. The mornings are great to work with GDC, and to prepare for any deliverables to be reviewed by the UK teams about 5.5 hours later. 

At 12.30pm, lunch is served in the cafeteria on each floor. The meal, known as ‘Thali’, includes a selection of South Indian delicacies that changes every day. The office is located by a park which is a popular spot for a lunchtime stroll in the sun.

After lunch, meetings and communications usually occur with the UK until the evening. The second half of the work day is good for incorporating comments and communicating project work internationally.  

Clocking off at dinner time, or otherwise in the afternoon in England, we usually explore new dinner spots in the city or check out any local events. 

Living in the 4th most populated city in India, Bangalore has a lot to offer. From local markets to up-scale commercial areas, everything is within the reach of a rickshaw’s ride. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Bangalore does not lack pockets of greeneries if you ever need to relax.

Bangalore is a great hub for travelling, may that be buses, trains or flights. Being aware that I am only here for three months, I have been using the weekends to explore this multicultural and beautiful country. I had the opportunity to visit Hampi, Kerala, Goa and Mumbai in my past month here. All of these places are unique in their own way and have never failed to impress.

Hitting the one-month checkpoint, I am glad to say that it has been a truly rewarding journey. Our colleagues in GDC have warmed us with their great hospitality and friendliness since our arrival. Working here has given me the chance to gain experience in project coordination in multidisciplinary projects with team members spread across Bristol, Bangalore and Gurgaon.
